Manhunt 2 Banned In The UK - console
(hx) 10:48 PM CEST - Jun,19 2007 - Post a comment / read (4)
The British Board of Film Classification has refused to rate the upcoming horror sequel Manhunt 2, in development by Rockstar Toronto for Wii, Rockstar London for PlayStation 2, and Rockstar Leeds for PSP. Without a BBFC rating, the game may not be sold within the United Kingdom. Today's ruling applies to the Wii and PlayStation 2 versions; the PSP version has not yet been submitted for classification.
David Cooke, Director of the BBFC said:  "Rejecting a work is a very serious action and one which we do not take lightly. Where possible we try to consider cuts or, in the case of games, modifications which remove the material which contravenes the Board's published Guidelines. In the case of Manhunt 2 this has not been possible. Manhunt 2 is distinguishable from recent high-end video games by its unremitting bleakness and callousness of tone in an overall game context which constantly encourages visceral killing with exceptionally little alleviation or distancing. There is sustained and cumulative casual sadism in the way in which these killings are committed, and encouraged, in the game.

"Although the difference should not be exaggerated the fact of the game's unrelenting focus on stalking and brutal slaying and the sheer lack of alternative pleasures on offer to the gamer, together with the different overall narrative context, contribute towards differentiating this submission from the original Manhunt game. That work was classified '18' in 2003, before the BBFC's recent games research had been undertaken, but was already at the very top end of what the Board judged to be acceptable at that category."

Now GameSpot is reporting that a Rockstar PR rep has admitted the game did indeed receive an AO rating from the ESRB. This means that the game will have its distribution options limited as most retailers will not sell games with an AO rating.

Violent games are there so people can pour their anger on virtual characters(aka kill a few people in some game) and thus reliving pressure and giving you a relaxing effect.

The problem here is that teens do the opposite of that, they build up anger from games(not only violent ones, mostly games they can't beat or get stuck somewhere). And they go out and do stupid things.

Has it come to your attention that no old gamer has ever gone berserk, i think its because of the way we perceive what we play. I started gaming in 1999 and have pretty much played all the classics since 1995 that are for PC, i played them first then i got in the violent games and to me they are just that - games.

What i think is that new games lack something that old games have, maybe its gameplay, maybe its the feel of the game, maybe its the feeling you get when you finish a hard level. Today's games don't have that feeling, i play almost all new FPSs/RPGs that come out and very few give that satisfaction when i finish them, in fact the last one was Advent Rising and it came out in 2005.

So my final thoughts are that money hungry corporations(read EA Games) should get a big stick in the *** and start making QUALITY games, rather than focusing QUANTITY.

Isn't it weird though that we called games like Blood1/2, Rise of The Triads and even Doom as...well, just games, away back in the mid nineties onwards.
I actualy thought they were bloody clever! The level design (back then) and the humour were excellent!!
Sure they dabbled in risque material; drugs, nazis etc, etc. but we were also inteligent enough to know that.
The trouble is, a group of guys kill a whole load at a school and Doom is found in their video tapes of enactment/fantasy/delusional material.
Press/media jump on that, and something made up of 2D sprites becomes a link to people who were clearly missing a sandwich or two short of a picnic, and it's the cause of them losing the plot!
Pulease...sigh.
Nowadys though there are a lot of kids with no identities and no individuality. They are also poor at expressing themselves at school or with family.
They probably day dream about killing people they hate?
The result is they are easily impressed and quite happy to lose themselves in crazy fantasy/violent games; Which likes of Manhunt/Postal are. (These 'games' do nothing but stir up controversy)
And require little thinking needed to play. That's where the point of reality and fantasy is easily crossed.
When i played the demo of Postal with the girls pleading and you being able to urinate in their mouths....i thought WTF is this!! I showed it to my wife who thought it was just plain SICK!
It's mindless and perverted. Thing is, Young kids play this *regardless* of what age they are. Then they think it's normal when they are 9yrs old  Then they grow up like that!?!?

Saddest thing, there *is* a market out there for them.... shows how warped society is and for goverments for allowing companies to churn $hit like this out.

If you think censoring any of this stuff is going to prevent any of the school shootings or other things, you are just deluding yourself.

Don't think for one second that just because you can't handle a certain scenario that means that other people can't or it will turn them into murderers. Don't censor me because you are a week individual.

Face it, there are crazy people out there who are going to do crazy things regardless of what games they play, what movies they watch or whether or not their parents beat them. Normal people don't go crazy and kill people because of a video game.

It's just another case of a few assholes ruining things for the rest of us.

If they truly want to be fair, how about banning movies like hostel, total recall, and Rambo. But "oh no... those are all cool... it's just interactive media that's the problem".

Bullshit.
