CVG has posted the first batch of screenshots and a gameplay movie from Maelstrom, an upcoming PS2 and Xbox title from Virgin Interactive.
Maelstrom mixes first-person space combat, first-person shooter action, a healthy dose of humour and some damn attractive character and robot design. As you can see from the movie, the addition of features such a cup holder in the cockpit of your madly swinging spacecraft stink of everything generations of comic fans love about 2000AD, right up to the point where comedy is replaced by hardcore robot-wrecking action in the bays of massive ships.
The Unreal Warfare engine seems to be rocking in a very good way from the look of this movie, which includes in-game footage from both space combat and FPS sections of the game. There seems to be some confusion over release date for exactly that reason: it’s still uncertain if Epic will allow the release of Maelstrom before its upcoming cross-platform Unreal titles ship. Whatever happens, you won’t be seeing Maelstrom this year on anything other than PlayStation 2, which is currently scheduled to get the title this Christmas. [more]
