Last week, to the surprise of industry observers and gamers alike, MumboJumbo acquired Ritual Entertainment in order to reinforce its own army of developers and further strengthen its hold on the casual games market. Fansite Ritualistic has posted an interview with the Levelord to find out what exactly this acquisition means for Ritual, what kind of games we can expect from the studio, and just what is going going to happen to SiN Episodes:
Let's talk SiN Episodes. Was the first episode, Emergence, successful financially? Why haven't we seen any Episode 2 news?

Levelord: The first episode did well, but not good enough to completely self-fund the second episode. It sold over 150,000 units, which is better than many shooters. It more than paid for itself, but not enough to entirely fund the next one.

This was caused by two reasons. The first episode was the most expensive because we needed to build the asset and code bases from the ground up. There were also tools and such that needed to be developed. Successive episodes would have benefited from that foundation, and therefore level this initial imbalance. We knew that when we started Episode 1, but the demand of the first episode was more than we anticipated. The first episode also ran longer than we expected (what game doesn't, even when you think you've planned for this) and it went over-budget.

We did continue with Episode 2, but we had to stop a few months ago due to a funding problem. Making games is fun, but it isn't easy, …especially for an independent developer!

Whatever... These guys have abandoned everything they've done. They always made promises they could never keep. When I got Emergence, I thought geez maybe they turned a new leaf. God, how sadly mistaken I was... Thanks to having good friends around I knew not to keep my hopes up for MP (no i didn't give a hoot about episode 2). I knew their regrouping wasn't gonna last and all they did was blow smoke again to their community.

In Sin 1 they banned me from their forums cuz I spoke the truth to the community about how Ritual was abandoning Sin. People flamed me etc and only weeks after I was banned, they/Ritual disappeared and never answered anything in light of Sin 1 and it's followup.

Ritual sucks and now it's proven beyond a doubt that they are totally incompetant.

"Try to make a good game" is better... eps1 didnt do much... if they had used another engine, and maybe do what they did in the first sin game, they had come up with a good game.

I did make a game actually and I worked as team lead on 2 other projects before throwing in the towel because of family obligations or just no time. The games I worked to support, won in Make Something Unreal. But true that's just over the past few years? what have you done?

You don't get it do you?? They are quitters and excuse makers and were and always waiting for the buyout since the beginning. Problem is, you have to have something DECENT to get bought out. Ritual has always had nothing but crap or they left their projects in disgrace. I find it more amusing what they've done because it characterizes them well as it is. What I will remember of Ritual was a company that seemed to want to make a game but never could go the full distance to do it. Ritual will always be remembered to me as making promises they could never fulfill. RIP Ritual.
