Q: Can you tell us something about the battle- and magic-system in Kult: Heretic Kingdoms? Chris: In the world of Kult: Heretic Kingdoms, Mages are special beings that are born with the power to attune to the magic in the world. A mage need not study hard to utilise this power, and so need not be a frail scholar. Mages advance in magical power by learning to attune with the natural power inherent in all things. The more time that a Mage spends with a particular weapon, piece of armour, or magical artefact, the more attuned to it that Mage becomes. Eventually, they acquire the magical essence of that object - this is the process of attunement. Some attunements enhance combat abilities, some are elemental attunements which are akin to magic spells. There are over a hundred attunements, and they can be combined in many different ways to create thousands of different types of character. For instance, you can choose to take the neutral path, and focus on weapon skills (enhancing your Critical attacks), or you might pick a single element and work towards being a mage of that element. Alternatively, you might like the thief approach - going for fast weapons and light armour, to give you the ability to dodge attacks and find weak points in the enemy's armour. Or you might develop multiple different roles, and change the focus of your character's abilities at different points in the game - it's entirely up to the player! The attunement system makes all the weapons interesting to acquire, as you have to fight with them for a while to master the attunement locked up in it, and the attunements combine in lots of interesting ways to create different tactical options.
