NovaLogic has released 11 new screenshots of
Joint Ops: Escalation, the first expansion pack for their recent multiplayer
first person shooter. Joint Operations: Escalation is currently set to arrive on
store shelves this November. In related news, Gamespy has posted
a solid two page preview of the game. Here's a taster:
There will also be new vehicles that aren't so lethal, such as the dirt bike, a three-wheeled golf cart/taxicab, and a fuel tanker. Although the fuel tanker can be deadly to anyone standing nearby if it happens to get in the way of gunfire. "It makes a pretty tremendous explosion," Taubel says, explaining how it can be parked in certain strategic locations. All the vehicles will have handbrakes, which required reworking the physics systems a bit. There will also be new physics for the dirt bikes and the tanks' treaded movement.
But Taubel stresses that Joint Operations is still very much an infantry-based game. There will be new guns, including two new assault rifles, a new PDW (personal defense weapon), and a new pistol for each side. More important than these new guns are the new bullets. Players will choose a load-out of full metal jacket, armor-piercing, or soft point rounds. The armor piercing rounds will be more effective against targets wearing body armor, which players can select for the lone accessory slot in their inventory. The soft point rounds do more damage to unarmored targets and the FMJ rounds are an all-around balanced choice. To keep things balanced, the armor piercing rounds do less damage against soft targets. "We wanted a system a little like 'rock, paper, scissors'," Taubel says, "and not 'here's armor piercing and here's BB guns and spitwads, so which one will you take?'"
