iOS 14 Promotes Widgets to Home Screen - tech
(hx) 11:53 PM CEST - Jun,22 2020 - Post a comment / read (24)
Apple has revealed iOS 14, which brings a number of new features to the OS for Apple's iPhones:

  • Widgets: Apple has promoted Widgets to the main home screen. Just as Android has always allowed, you can now mix re-sizable widgets in with your app icons. A special widget called Smart Stack collects several widgets into one rectangle that lets you scroll through multiple widgets while taking up minimal home screen space.
  • App Clips: A new kind of micro-app designed to let you complete a single transaction using a rich app interface, without installing a full app. App Clips are limited to 10 MB so they download quickly. App Clips can be launched from a Maps listing, a message, a QR code, or a new type of physical sticker that includes an NFC tag and a visual code similar to QR codes. App Clips can leverage Sign in with Apple and Apple Pay so users don't need to spend time creating a new account. App Clips can be used to order take-out or delivery, rent a scooter, pay for parking, and more. To help small businesses to take advantage of App Clips, Apple will work with larger services like Yelp to help them create App Clips for individual business listings.
  • App Library: A new screen past the right-most home screen with auto-generated folders of apps, including Suggestions, Recently Added, Arcade, Social, etc. To make it easier to access, you can now hide infrequently-used home screens.
  • Picture in Picture: Video apps can now display playing video in a floating window over other apps. (Android has supported this since 2017.)
  • Translate app: Apple now has its own dedicated app for language translation. In landscape orientation, it switches to a Conversation Mode, for seamless two-way conversation with someone while both people look at the display. It auto-detects the language for each phrase spoken. The app supports English, Mandarin Chinese, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Portuguese, and Russian.
Apple has also updated Siri so it's no longer a full-screen experience every time it's activated. A small animation pops up at the bottom of the screen while it's listening, and many results pop up in a small box at the top, like a notification. Apple has also updated Maps to finally add directions for cycling, including elevation info. At launch, this feature is available in New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco Bay Area, Shanghai, and Beijing. Maps also now has dedicated features for electric cars. It can track your battery status and estimate range, as well as direct you to charging stations compatible with your specific car. At launch, it's compatible with BMW and Ford EVs. Finally, CarPlay now supports various wallpaper options, and supports new types of apps, including parking, EV charging, and fast food ordering. Apple is also adding a new indicator in the status bar to show when apps access your camera and/or microphone. Apple said iOS 14 will launch for consumers "this fall".

Update: Apple has released a full list of new features in iOS 14, which includes many not mentioned in today's WWDC keynote presentation. One notable new feature is a setting that will let users choose which app launches when a user clicks on a web link or email address. For example, in iOS 13, clicking on an email address always launches Apple's Mail app. In iOS 14, you will be able to set this to Gmail instead.

iOS 14 is compatible with these devices: iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone Xs, iPhone Xs Max, iPhone XR, iPhone X, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone SE (1st generation), iPhone SE (2nd generation), iPod touch (7th generation).

A lot of these are features Android users have had for years but I guess some of the new ones are good.

I own Samsung Note 9 now 8) (my previous phones were: HTC Touch BlackStone, Samsung Galaxy Note 1, Samsung Galaxy Note 3)

"New" features for a phone with the biggest notch on the planet

Fugly all right.

crApple so wants to be Android. it copies everything Android does.
crApple have never had an original thought in their heads.
Siri existed as an app until crApple brought the company.
Everything GUI was on Android first.
crApple pay is just google pay with a screwed up NFC payment system.
Samsung Pay, Google Pay, Any other Android NFC payment system is free. crApple Pay they take a percentage of the purchase so its not free to use crApple pay. Typical crApple. Making money off something that should be free. Every other rival is free not them.

Everything crApple does for IOS is a cut down, locked up version Android had many years before crApple screwed it up.

Name 1 thing crApple have done originally? Do some research before answering and find the truth first. Most likely you will find crApple DIDN'T do it first, they most likely copied it from Android or brought the company that did it originally.

Think about it. Not even the iphone 1 was original. I had a iMate JasJam before I wasted my money on the original iPhone and that JasJam was better. I only used the iPhone for about 3 months before going back.
The JasJam was running Windows phone 5 and had a touch screen and a pen (Just like the Note 9 I use now)
It did a lot more than the iPhone could. It could play videos, record videos, MMS, and all the features the iphone couldn't do the older jasjam could and did do better.

crapple iphone is a copy of other devices and software. its not original. crApple LIE to you and they steal and cheat you too.
You can get an android phone for $200 that does more and actually better than the latest iphone which is $2000. Proof crApple cheat and rip you off.

Do your own research and you will see how bad they really are. I know first hand, I have the devices (Still have) so I know what they did and how bad they really are.
I will never buy ANY crApple device again as its an inferior Android clone thats locked down so tight it cant do 20% of what an Android device 20% of its cost can do.

Had android for 20 years, lasted about 1 1/2 years then the next update, or bloatware slowed it down and down. Then they never supported it - as per what ever fucking idiot company decided YOUR phone needed! Every android phone doesn’t get the same update, so it’s a false comparison.

That and nearly 70% of android phones were hacked through apps or malware.
Almost 1 BILLION android phones at risk of hacking

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-51751950

People just keep using these shit ancient phones when there’s NO security patches released for them and they are that stupid they don’t even realise.

I had to ALWAYS have a fucking virus scanner on a fucking android phone!
Bought a Apple iPhone 5SE had it 4 years fully supported, NEVER had a virus scanner NEVER had ANY fucking issues cause it’s the same update ALL IPhones supported get. Apple Pay biometric, boots in seconds ALWAYS. NEVER slows down, doesn’t have bloatware from who you bought your phone from, don’t need to jail break it - like why the fuck would you spend hundreds on a phone to make it like you want it, like there’s a severe issue with that and yourself if that’s what you do?? No VIRUS SCANNER NEEDED, no malware, no fucking dodgy App Store full of chinese scammers!
It’s a phone, it doesn’t everything you want a phone to do, sat nav in the car, maps. People have some weird deep down hang ups, when there’s more important things in life to worry about. Buy whoever you want but you won’t be owning an android for as long as an iPhone unless you pay into the thousands, the software support is the worst shit I have ever, ever had and wouldn’t take a FREE android phone if it dropped through my letter box.

I have 3 perfectly good Samsung,Nokia and even a Huawei-before they were corrupt bastards too. Slow as shit thanks to shit open source android.

So We've Put an App Drawer In Your App Drawer!

@SABOT
I love it when people have a false sense of security.
You're a shining example.
I hope the wake-up call will not be very painful.

gx-x(06:05 PM CEST - Jun,24 2020 )
yea, like there wasn't an class action law suite against apple for slowing down phones, but somehow SABOT thinks apple doesn't do that. I don't even want to go into other delusions he is suffering from, it's pointless. Putting a VPN on the phone was too big of an ask for him to do on android. I never ever had a virus on the phone.

I still have this leaked iCloud data somewhere :-D

last year happened something similar....

Cloud Possibly Suffered A Privacy Breach Last Year That Apple Kept a Secret
https://thehackernews.com/2019/01/icloud-privacy-breach.html

Conclusion: iOS isn't so securie as people think!

But there's no doubt that Apple is very rich company :D

What hacking shit? I DONT use cloud NOTHING. MY phone is connected to NOTHING. FFS what part don't you understand? read again ONE BILLION android PHONES at risk of hacking because they are not updated by the company that supplied YOUR phone! Boy you guys got a LOT to learn about security and phones. 30 YEARS of PC building and experience. Just because you hate Apple doesn't mean you have to be thick ignorant guys.

Android are the worst supported shit on the market period!

it's 6 fucking years old news....

Apple is sooo hackable as a PHONE the US Police couldn't even break into it and tried to get a court order for the pin. it took 6 weeks to break into an ancient Iphone 5C -not cloud the PHONE.https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/mar/28/apple-fbi-case-dropped-san-bernardino-iphone

it's because there are one billion android models from different manufacturers, unlike 2 iphones per year...Of course, there is no $50 iphone $80 iphone, $100 iphone and so on and so on. but there is an android for every pocket.
You can always get an "One" or you could get a Nexus phone and be supported for longer.

The point is you can't avoid apple update that cuts your performance to make your non-replaceable battery last a bit longer. So you already got your phone slowed down by apple. You didn't have a choice.

PS. I think in spite of lawsuit they added an option to revert to original performance on affected devices. Probably hidden away from a user like everything meaningful on iPhone usually is.

You can replace the battery quite easy. Done it on my wife's 5SE. Buy it anywhere on amazon and anywhere else.

Erm no i didn't get my phone slowed down by Apple, that's specific models and how you define slowed down. Android on the other hand was -and i watch regularly on buses people that use the phone to activate a ticket, then have to sit down and wait for it to launch then go back to the driver. in 4 years it's worked every day, 5 days a week.

gx-x(11:42 PM CEST - Jun,24 2020 )
you can but it voids your waranty. And Apple could sue you if they feel like because they know that you did it, like it or not. :D

ah, I almost forgot, you got slowed down and you got a new battery for a 10 year old phone. And you think Android phones are your problem. Seems to me, you were buying $50 Android phones with TN screens...those are called disposable phones, you know, use them for a day and throw them away. And you were expecting support....

edit: yes it did get slowed down.
And I have a car. If I don't want to drive I call a cab. I am not poor.

Sabot(11:44 PM CEST - Jun,24 2020 )
gx-x> you can but it voids your waranty. And Apple could sue you if they feel like because they know that you did it, like it or not. :D

What warranty? It's 4 years old....boy of boy.

The main thing is, your happy with Android i'm happy with my 4 years old 5SE. Put it this way, i was on my second Android by this time because the software wasn't supported.

heretic(12:00 AM CEST - Jun,25 2020 )
I don't hate Apple or iPhone. I wrote here many times that iOS devices are definitely more secure than devices with Android :-D

But everything is hackable even iOS devices. Just FBI and iPhone users think that nobody can hack an iPhone :P And that's definitely good for hackers!!

Exploits like that are common....but it's very rare you can read about it on public internet.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/zakdoffman/2019/08/30/google-shocks-1-billion-iphone-users-with-malicious-hack-warning/#5bab6bef2524

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8H9HSDbMRoQ

Android is even worse, because there's simply too many devices with Android (Apple has only 14% of market).

For example, in April 2020 someone released very ugly hacking tool based on .QMG exploit

http://www.techamok.com/?pid=21727

Took 3-4 weeks until my Samsung phones received a patch :-(

But with Apple bugs it's often even worse, because Apple is often deadly silent  PR: we have everything under control 8) :D

Sabot(12:21 AM CEST - Jun,25 2020 )
Of course everything is hackable, but like real life a 'Thief' wants to take easy street over anything that warrants time and a lot of effort. Sit on public transport next time and check wi-fi, look at the number on unsecure phones on it that *you* can hack into to? People are the *weakest* link The amount that never bother to update Android Vscanners, or software or apps.

Even Smart TVs and devices have been binned now because they are vulnerable. Then there's the idiots that leave default router passwords. Apple is piss easy to navigate and make secure. I don't trust Android apps and never will since the store never vetted them. That's why it's harder to get an app on Apple.
Everything is only as good as the user either having full support throughout the devices lifetime or the user knowing what to do to protect themselves.
But as we all know companies want to sell phones so it bins software updates or slows the phone down with a one size fits all software download for your phone when it barely runs on it and you can't uninstall it! Which is what happened with my Android phones.

As i've said i've got 4 years out this one phone -same battery- and it's getting IOS 14, so that's all i ask and anyone wants. So it's looking like 5-6 years out of it and paying biometric without card details is just happy days :)

gx-x(12:31 AM CEST - Jun,25 2020 )
whats the point? Every iOS is the same as the previous one, well, except this one now, that is going to get a feature android always had.
You have your app drawer and that's your phone. What's there to update? What's there to keep up with? Nothing, it's a simple device, for simple people. I don't even use a phone feature, I use it more as a laptop sort of, I use it to connect and troubleshoot devices, remotely control servers and so on. Phone? Who the heck needs a phone...
What I need a "phone" for iPhone cannot do. What you SABOT need a phone for, nokia 3310 can do.

Also iphone 5 is from 2014, , screw your" 4 year old phone" it's 6 years old, it's slower than $50 new android, it's a piece of shit by today's standards. I can get one for like ~$20...it's junk.

PS. I hate Apple and everything they stand for. They are worse than microsoft, they make devices for retards and enable them instead of pushing them to learn and be better. Then they deny repairs, overcharge for everything etc etc. Screw apple.

PPS. You can update your android yourself, it's easier than changing the battery on an iphone. But you were lazy, or never heard of XDA.

Sabot(12:50 PM CEST - Jun,25 2020 )
With that immature comment we’ll leave it at that. I don’t need to justify my intelligence to you over 30 years of owning phones but I respect people’s choices of phones, even if they don’t understand the security issues that they have. But there you go.

gx-x(01:13 PM CEST - Jun,25 2020 )
Right, I am immature. I guess that's better than being lazy and naive like you.

Maybe you should get aplple monitor stand for $2000 too. That's mature.

Also your junk phone is ~$70 in a store, probably $30 on ebay.
https://www.bestbuy.com/site/searchpage.jsp?id=pcat17071&st=used+iphone+5s&intl=nosplash

*grabbin' popcorn*

gx-x(03:07 PM CEST - Jun,25 2020 )
nah I am done, apple users are a waste of time.

Sabot(03:43 PM CEST - Jun,25 2020 )
Lazy and naive like me. Why? Because we all use our phones a million different ways and not like you.... by the way, I think there’s over a billion android retards, as you put it, in the front of the queue. Can’t believe after 30 years I’m in a heated discussion about why I like marmite and you like jam. Because that’s all this simple going off the handle is about. Why on earth do people lose the plot these days? You and I have every right to choose what phone to buy; like a car, like a PC or OS. But in the ‘old’ days there’s constructive criticism. Debate about good and bad points, but now it’s all about ‘my opinion matters’ and everyone’s a retard I’d they don’t agree. There’s no need for that, unless there’s an age, mentality issue etc. I loved good old discussions - you even learned something from them, but not anymore. It’s just a vitriol Cesspit the internet. The internet is full of lying trolls now that even believe they are right when they are wrong and pointed out. No one can even string a sentence together about why they believe they are right. On person on steam blamed (PC obviously) SnowRunner for bugs that caused his console to crash, yet when people asked him why he was on the steam forum it was because snowrunner wasn’t on steam and it’s bugged anyway. To which several people - inc my self said we had played several days (5 for me real-time) without a single bug that he described. He disappeared. The usual response these days. Start it then can’t constructively finish it, instead of coming across as a complete idiot. But that is just the norm now. They end up bringing you down to their level and they’re away off on their phone doing it on their Facebook or whatever crap they idolise and never come back to read the response.

Btw, hex puts up enough crap about Win 10 and it’s security and stability issues. I gues pretty much all the planet is a ‘retard’ then for using Win# and I’m talking at work as well

heretic(07:14 PM CEST - Jun,25 2020 )
So we have a flamewar here now 8)

Like iPhone owners vs rest of world :D

Actually I could never use iPhone as my phone..it's really too much limited device for me :-D ...or maybe I'm really too old...or maybe still too young?

well data from 2014/2015 says this

"A new study that was published last week noted that the most significant factor of how much consumers spend on Apple products a year is not how much they earn, but rather how long they've lived. According to new data from Slice Intelligence, male Apple buyers 65 and older spent the most on Apple products over the past year than any other group, with an average online spend of $976. Okay, that surprised me. "

https://www.patentlyapple.com/patently-apple/2015/11/the-demographic-that-buys-more-apple-products-online-just-might-surprise-you.html

The same with OSX vs Windows

I could never use Macbook as my computer. The same reasons I mentioned above - it's too limited. To be honest, now OSX looks already pretty dated in comparison with Windows 10. It feels even a bit funny if you have to work with it in 2020 (yeah I have lots of customers with OSX). But it would be for very long discussion :-)

You know that I hated Windows 10 a couple years ago. And I had my reasons as IT admin. But since the end of 2019 I would say, Windows 10 is finally ready to be a good replacement for Windows 7. It just works quite well. It's not like I suddenly don't like Window 7 anymore. Actually I still very like Windows 7 and I still install classic shell into W10. But you cannot stop time / evolution ...just show must go on.

Yes you have a choice. You can stop yourself somewhere, reject new technologies and be old man or you can accept new technologies as they come....but if you wanna be "IN" there's basically no choice and we all know it well.
