Intel i9-10900K CPU runs very hot & consumes 235W - tech

The core i9 10900K is going to be the flagship gaming CPU in the “Comet Lake S” lineup from INTEL. With the launch date coming nearer, it would be hitting shelves soon. Based on the tests run by this user, it looks like this chip is quite power hungry and it can easily get hot as well. INTEL has been relying on the same aging 14nm process node for quite some time, with little changes done to the CPU architecture as well. This has now started to show its age. The chip also ran at a peak temperature of 93deg C, with an average temp of around 87deg C. This unlocked CPU does run at higher clock speeds and hence runs hotter and consumes more power at full load. The Core i9-10900K can hit 250W when all the cores are pushed to 5.2 GHz (at 1.3V+ voltage). 5.1 and 5.0 GHz speeds can also be achieved with lower voltages of 1.22-1.25V, with the power consumption being in the range of 220-230W, resulting in slightly lower temperatures too.

intel said from the start that the new PL2 state will allow for bigger draws for short times. It was [u:cba6b2beab]written[/u:cba6b2beab], by Intel, that 10900K and 10900KF will draw up to 250W and 10700K could draw up to 230W ( I'd have to look this one up, but I am no journalist) etc. People don't read and now act shocked. It shocks me how some of them call them selves journalists but are simple n00bs, not deserving a time of day.

edit: on the leaked screenshots, both PL1 and PL2 states are at 250W limit. So it's not default. It could have been some malicious a$$hole spreading crap to get clicks.

Does it really matter who wrote what?
Intel's building CPU on obsolete technology, still trying to capitalize on their past investments. That's not how technology works, they've been holding back progress for years.
Fuck them.

that's kind of off topic. Someone coming from some old configuration has a choice now, there is nothing wrong with taking something like 10400 for ~$180, it's no worse than anything AMD has at that price for that kind of user. Old or not. If they can match AMDs 7nm with their 14nm, think how ahead their 14nm actually is, and what will 7nm intel do..


Yes they are assholes. No argument there. But they were in position to be what they were. Just like every other company. Every company is an asshole.

PS. Obviously the technology is not obsolete since they are still competitive. It's their pricing that was crappy. And I already elaborated on that. Why would they change anything if the best AMD had to offer was something slower than i5 2500K? Of course they were going to price their stuff higher, there was no competition.

No, that's just the norm for new CPUs with a lot of cores and threads. You can't expect them to use 40W like 4 core CPUs do.
