VE has conducted an interview with Relic designer Drew Chambers (who was formerly a designer at Irrational Games on Freedom Force), talked about their upcoming RTS game -  Impossible Creatures (formerly known as Sigma)
VE: Impossible Creatures isn’t exactly your ordinary cookie-cutter real-time strategy game, can you tell us a little bit about it and what ideas inspired the game?
Drew Chambers: Impossible Creatures (or IC as it’s known around the office) is quite different from a standard RTS game. That said, we have retained many of the core aspects of the RTS genre, such as resourcing, base building, tech trees, but we’ve expanded on what we see as the primary form of interacting with an RTS game, the units. Because players can create innumerable combinations of creatures, each being very different, the game that’s played will always be different. Many RTS games fall into a trap where the same combination of units are always effective, or the same build order will always win. This trap can easily cause the game not to be fun anymore, because the exploration element is removed. With IC, players will be able to explore and experiment with so many different types of creatures that all games should be different, and therefore the fun just keeps on going and getting better!
