Sim-Arena has written a new preview of IL-2 Sturmovik, the World War II era themed 3D combat flight sim from Maddox Games.
"The graphics of this simulation are far and away the best I have ever seen in any combat flight simulation. Screen shots do not do IL-2 justice: you have to see (and hear) the sim in action. Indeed-while graphics have often been a secondary consideration to the hardcore-sim fan-the game's astonishingly detailed graphics reflect the unprecedented attention to detail-and realism-that seems to permeate the sim. Watching a Focke-Wulfe blown to pieces by a close-in shot from the 37mm cannon of a Russian lend-lease P-39 is not only graphically spectacular, but more importantly, serves to demonstrate just how elemental a role an advanced physics-based engine plays in every facet of the simulation. How so? Well, the German plane blows-up real-good, but far more striking is how the aircraft is so suddenly transformed from a deadly threat into a stricken, smoking pinwheel as it spirals towards the ground. All very impressive, but all the more so, for as (to my layman's eye) each piece of the shattered aircraft now seems to have a flight model all its own; equally impressive to that of the original, undamaged aircraft."
