During a chat with Digital Foundry regarding design, dev culture, and tech, creative director of id Software Tim Willits explained why there would be an 8GB install of RAGE on PS3, and why the Xbox 360 version comes on three discs: Digital Foundry: There have been stories that the PS3 version has an 8GB install...

Tim Willits: Yes, that's absolutely true.

Digital Foundry: What are the elements that you require to install? Is it just that the Blu-ray drive isn't fast enough?

Tim Willits: Sony was great. Kudos to Sony for letting us do that. They don't allow every game to do that. So definitely, hats off. What we were able to do is install all the textures to the highest level. What is nice about the PS3 platform is that it's just one platform. Everyone has one Blu-ray drive, one hard drive, it's all the same. Some of the other systems you have... should I install it on my 360? Should I not install it? So yes, it's very nice. Digital Foundry: Did you settle on two or three discs in the end for 360?

Tim Willits: Three discs. We recommend installing the game to the hard drive, but you don't need to install all three discs. If you don't have the space available on your hard drive, don't stress. Install the first disc, the first chapter, the first half of the game, then when you're done, uninstall and install disc two.

Am I wrong in thinking this is just a case of lazy programming and bad optimization? Seriously this game cannot possibly need to be on three discs I can't even think of a PC game that requires three discs.

Meanwhile on the PC land, the PC gamer buys his game digitally, it downloads on his 2TB hard disk and he couldn't care less uninstalling reinstalling anything! Need more space? Get a second HDD. Add to that superior graphics, resolution, motion, etc. And they call them "gaming" consoles. LOL! They should call them, "bust your balls" consoles!

GTA 4 is ~24GB install on PC on the other topic: buy 500gb hdd for ~30$, open trashbox 360, take out and clone original drive to new 500gb hdd, put 500gb hdd in trashbox 360, install all three discs of rage that you just downloaded of a torrent site for free, win.

A lot of games come over 15gb!!!
And if you think why it comes on more than ONE disc for the stupud 360 - the answer is simple - the 360 has jack shit the equivalent of nothing on BluRey.
Simple as that...

and do you know why they need to install 8GB of textures on PS3? Because that crap that $ony calls BlueRay is so slow that it even can't load the textures on the fly. Now, back to spitting on xbox360, thank you.
