Neowin gets a look at Razer's Project Fiona:

It has an Intel i7 processor, a touch screen, and is running a standard version of Windows - it's basically a standard PC in a non-standard package. The prototype looks large, but is actually very easy to hold and the controllers on either side are easy to use. It really seemed easier to hold for longer periods of time than a standard tablet becaue of the attached controllers. A docking port on the bottom can be used for various functions, such as a keyboard/mouse combo or a standard dock. In addition, a keyboard and mouse can be connected via Bluetooth.

CPU = 80-100
Mobo = 50-100
Ram 8GB = 30-50
Monitor = 100.00
Video = 50-100.00
Keyboard = 10-20
Mouse = 10-30
Gamepad = 10-30
Speakers/headset = 10-100
PSU = 30-50
Case = 30-100

You can spend less than five hundred bucks and play just about any title for PC maxed out. You can play any console and virtual console games at your leisure. You can get even cheaper or upgrade certain parts depending on what deals you run across.

Newegg had a core i3 setup case mobo cpu 4GB of ram for under three hundred this week that would do plenty fine. Throw in a cheap 50-60 radeon card and you can play most games with ease. It was a good deal because it cost slightly more than a core i5 2500k cpu alone.

The problem with the Razer is battery. The setup they have can't last that long on battery and if you're truly a gamer and not casual you'll be plugged into a wall more than half the time.

A cool grand can get you a halfway decent laptop and years ago when the turions were new I picked up a four or five hundred dollar laptop for the wife that still runs today. Imagine what you can get now and with a cool 1k.

I don't think you would pull this out from the bag unless you had at least an hour to play.
If you have an hour, I am fairly sure you'll be more or less stationary - so sitting next to a plug is not an issue. The issue could be the amount of plugs; typically there are only a few - the ability to share the charger (multiple devices simultaneously) would be a nice feat.
The biggest benefit is the ability to be mobile - taking all you games, saved games and everything with you.
The second biggest benefit could be the ability to set up a multiplayer game on the spot via ad-hoc networks via WiFi (challenge someone on the spot, play in airplanes, trains with people, etc).
Of course, this assumes that this will truly perform better than the average laptop (or else it's not worth it).

Seriously Baconnaise, you are daft. How many times we been through it that these parts you specify is total load of shit. Ya if you want to buy a total piece of shit PC, yes, we know you can build it with the shittiest parts in the world but to play games and actually enjoy them is a different story. A good decent PC that you wont have to continually upgrade will cost you easy $1,000. This tab however looks like shit and offers nothing that interests me. I can go buy a fucking ipad that can play lots of shit and do a lot other things for half the price. Guy said nothing about the cpu, the ram, the video card or how many games are supported on it. For fuck sakes the interview sucks so bad he didn't even say the resolution. Overall, stupid interview and stupid product.

Tom, you are wrong about $1000PC. There is no need for that. Games stayed back in 2008/9 so the hardware from those years (hi-end or middle to hi-end) is sufficient. I run core2duo, 4gigs of ram on a p45 DFI mobo using gtx460 1gb and I game in 1920x1080. Everything except Anno 2070 is working like a charm. I actually downgraded my PC in past 2 years, went from 5850 back to gtx260, sold my creative x-fi sound card as it served no purpose and so on. Now I did get a gtx460 but that's only because I got it as an replacement for gtx260 that broke down.

PS. You are talking about decent gaming PC, and I stand by what I wrote above, I just wanted to say that tablet in the video is NOT for decent gaming. It's a crutch for gaming... You can't calculate ~400$ monitor into PC to be able to compare it to that screen on the tablet. Actually I have no idea why are you two guys comparing desktop PC to a mobile device anyway...

The interview compared PC gaming and the razor however you're right gx-x,
traditional PC gaming and anything else is not the same.

PC gaming is about the big monitor a foot or two from your face, the preciseness of the mouse and keyboard control, being able to play hours on end in that position, cold beer at the right of the monitor, bowl of chips beside that. Games are not games, they're sports, ultimate focus, world take-over-time.

The console is about lying on the couch with the control in your hands, the bowl of chips balanced on your chest, the big screen TV or projector, the beers on the floor at arms reach, its not like the preciseness of the PC, is about being able to game on the couch (or sofa to the americans) in any position. The dog, cat, or significant other may dominate the other side of the couch/sofa/chesterfield.

Tablets and these things are mobile, you may not game like that for hours on end, nice for the cottage or the airport, or where your console/PC are thousands of kilometers away.

Maybe in hardware, there are similarities, but socially and how the game is played, its another different platform.

well actually, the guy in the interview DIDN'T compare them, he said it is not meant to be comparable, he said that it should be an extension to PC and not to be compared with keyboard + mouse gaming experience. However, 1000$+ for an extension is a bit way of the charts...Then again, if you want to run windows on the tablet with DX support and have 1000$ to waste so you can brag around, sure, why not. People buy Alienware laptops all the time...

anyway, I bet that hardware inside that Chinese tablet is nothing special to begin with. I am thinking it's a regular tablet with refreshed tech from intel and nVidia with an embended gamepad that cost you 500$.

you can (could, if it is too late) include BF3, NFS shift1/2, Skyrim and so on. They will all work fine in 1080p, well, I don't know what GPU did you put in but on gtx460 and my c2d all those run just fine, meaning 40+ fps. Granted, I overclocked my c2d to 4ghz and put moderate oc to gtx460 just because I could, but nevertheless, I tried those even on 6770 and they worked fine as well. Thing is, if you are not running insane amounts of AA and resolutions beyond 1080p, game industry didn't go very far as I said earlier. They are constantly recycling same ol engines because they use them on consoles too. So, until the next wave of consoles something in the line of i3 and gtx560 Ti should be more then enough for 1080p gaming.

edit: ok, I see now, GT440 is in the computer.

I picked up a gtx460 for another comp around 110 a year or two ago (rebate). Saw the same deal only for 100 this time (no rebate). I built two extra comps for the kids on phenom 965 blacks which had unlockable cores. These are 3.3 stock dual core. Cheap Asus board is about 30-50 now still I wager and another 30 for 8GB of ram. The 965's were about 89 bucks when I purchased them. Anyways I forget which radeon I threw in one of them 5570 or something. It was 59 bucks and handles all the indie games roblox league of legends and more. The card can seriously play games for sixty bucks. The other kid comp has a 460 in it as the oldest two are picky about lag :).

not in Libia while Gaddafi was in charge, electricity was free, so was rent if you are employed in government company. Gasoline was 0.1$ per litter, I don't know how much that is in gallons. I had some friends working there, I went twice to visit them...

bah, that was off the topic but when you mentioned electricity bills that struck my mind...

oh, water was also free.

Most are 720P yes, but still with much better details than any console could do. With an extra 30, the same system could be equipped with a 5750 and run the above apps at 1080P.

So cut the crap and focus on reality.

The good part is that a buyer always has the option to go for a 1000$ rig which will give him a much better experience. The problem is that with consoles, you just don't have choice. End of story.

Fantastic game machine that you can play at the worlds shittiest resolutions. Wow, you proved me wrong. :roll: I hope you didn't sit there like a fucking loser making all those vids for me. Seriously, I hope not because I think you better use a permanent ink marker and put a L on your forehead if you did.

True! They are already spoiled. I have a softmodded wii with a usb drive that they can access around sixty games or so at a whim. They all have a computer in the bedroom with a 21" or better lcd. I hooked up my two 28" hanns g 16:10 on mine so my wife got one of the 2405fpw monitors and the kids the other. I had a debranded HP 23" off woot.com on another one.

Roblox is played by all five of them almost daily. The youngest is three and he surprised me by actually knowing how to login to the game and loves the zombie modes. Roblox btw if some don't know is like minecraft only with more of a lego feel to it. They do have minecraft but prefer the roblox.

Electricity is always high for me being in Florida. The air is on quite a bit except in winter when the humidity drops to reasonable levels. This week though it's been around 40-50 degrees out so it's super cold for this area. I live down near the Everglades and have gators in canals among other things so anything under 70 degrees is cold for the region.

My bills will always be high though unless I become a hippy some how. Five kids the amount of trash we produce is astronomical even. I should invest in renewable batteries. I have sanyo eneloops and multiple chargers. Toys to remotes and wiimotes I go through so many batteries it's not even funny. Thank god for the eneloops though.

I have only two, but the battery consumption is pretty high (which is just bad for the environment). So, I invested in Energizer chargers and 2700mAh batteries. While I was in Europe, they were excellent. Now that I am in Canada, the seem to discharge very fast. There's something wrong with the chargers here.

480p and 720p differ pretty much. 720p and 1080p not so much on smaller screens (I mean 30" and under it is visible but ok, 22" and under, from barely visible to not visible at all). That's my personal experience with VIDEO content. Games are different story because image tends to get blurry on PC when you change to non-native resolution. If game engine does upscale from 720p to 1080p then it's less blurry but still...

I don't really know. Good 480p should be fine, but then again, tablets are held pretty close to the user's eyes so, on any format, compression is more visible because of that. That would be my educated guess, I didn't really play video files on any tablet. Best I did was 480p YT, looked fine to me if video was a quality one.

keep in mind that "televised" 480p (4:3) dvd will have all 480p which is not much less then 720p that is actually ~544p with the rest being black bars on top and bottom since all those movies are at most 16:9 aspect ratio.
Then again, like I said, if compression is done is done properly 480p 16:9 will be a bit more blurrier than 720p but only when you look at it up close. Look at it from one meter distance I think you won't notice much of a difference. I might be wrong thou.

PS. Playbook needs to downscale that 720p so other kind of anomalies might be visible.

I don't know; I can't create 720p videos to compare.
But, I saw some, and those are really good.
