Half Life 2 Beta Leaks To All - briefly

Neowin.net is reporting that Half Life 2 Beta leaked across the world onto the internet via IRC channels. The release by "anon" shows it's obvious that the hackers who managed to sucessfully steal source code of the game itself also stole the game itself and who knows what else. Heh, no comment :)
Update: Here is an article at CNN called Playable version of Half-Life 2 stolen. No comment from either Valve or Vivendi Universal Games on the matter.

Please don't support the distribution of this or download it yourself. Remember, this is stolen property. And again, contact Valve if you see it in circulation

I think NOW people who are not computer geeks will understand, that Microsoft Products are NOT SAFE. (you gotta read how VALVE thinks the whole source code leaked! its very funny actually, cause it makes VALVE look like people who dont know anything about security) oh well, i would start making half life 3 now and sell that next year...

This thing really is findable everywhere, I really do not think many people will buy the full game in april, since everyone will by then have played it around 10x over:):) Valve was stupid for putting the stuff on an online computer, thats like asking for trouble. Have fun playing, I know I will and so will many others who do not want to wait till next year.

This is more of a rough alpha than a beta, and most people won’t even enjoy this bootlegged version. And playing this game now is only going to ruin the real game’s experience for you when it comes out. Don’t even bother with this people, just wait for Valve to release the final code.

Okay, all the hacker got was the source. He didn't get any of the graphics, models, sounds etc etc etc. Look into your HL directory. See that HL executable? If you decompiled that you would have the source to HL1. Now look at all the other shit in the HL directory - the hacker didn't get any of that for HL2. Saying things like you going to be able to play it 10x over before April and that not many people will buy it is ridiculous. The soucre is important, but its not the entire game.

thats assuming the hacker actually realeased that with the package, i mean seriously would someone trouble themselves to hack into valve just to give it to the work for free? and correct me if i'm wrong but what was the source code doing on a network, shouldnt something that serious be put on a standalone network not connected anyhow to the outside world? I mean shouldn't companies like this take advice on security measures equivalent if not to FBI's langley?

I agree it is funny, but also very very sad for a company that has made prob a stellar game destined for the history books. I disagree if its the most recent release it is a beta. valve was going to release the game in a month. all in all the hackers out there should do what they can to track down the culprits. I know how I'd feel if XX years of my life was just destroyed or damaged severely.

Have you played it yet John Eckart, Netfool?? From what I heard the release is 1.5Gb, so that ain't a little release. The releaser could have spiced it up with bogus files but I dunno why he would do that, an expert would soon see through that. Are there any people here who have seen it running?

When the game is extracted , it's 3,14 gb and it has 36217 files! That's alot, btw, i tried the map where blow that house so it falls on those guys, it really lagged there.

Hmm.. I think Valve sysadmins need to learn to force users to do Windows Updates and especially Office Updates to all machines on their company network. When Doom3 Alpha got released on the net and Id pleaded with people not to download it, it didn't work. So Valve asking people not to play it will probably be just as effective.

Read your facts and get them straight. THey sued IBM because they had the right of patent to UNIX and they released it.. I hope SCO loses anyways.. You could have people use Linux or the Mac or any other OS. But all have potential holes, and this issue Valve experienced is partially user error as well. If you really cared about security, BSD would be the OS for Valve to use on the desktop, not necessarily Linux.

Got the "beta". Runs like crap, but playable. It's missing alot of stuff. Clipping problems like mad. Sound doesn't work for me.

God.. you got the sarcasm award.. The source code is basically the skeleton internal structure of the game, the engine that drives all of it, to have what we all wish for ( a working copy from the source ) you would need art and models and all the facial stuff involved, which would take someone a fooking long time. That is why its only 33mb, the real game Im sure is going to be at least 1.4gb in size. Quit bullshitting us..

i think VALVE made one simple misstake, connecting computers that have the source code, the game and whatever to another computer that has access to the internet. this is just stupid, every network specialists uses at least two computers, one for internet connection, and one for the internal network. how can you be so naive and let your work computers open for attacks from the "world outside". but i guess VALVE will say, hey we had to test the multiplayer part... Stupid people do stupid things.

This is what happens when you have too much d@mn money to spend. You exhaust your whole life resource into making such a great game, only to have it jacked off the network and passed around like weed. Lets do the math shall we: Valve + HL2 x open fly = A nice breeze where the sun don't shine. Valve deserved what they got for leaving their zipper open and letting the flies come in. seem like more and more alpha or beta games are leakin out,i remember when doom3 or jedi academy leakedout, never really cared for them , and as much as i'd like to try HL2, i won't even bother gettin this shitty release, i'll just wait till retail comes out. At least it will be optimized to run properly in its own glory. :D

I have seen many beta game releases during my many years in front of a monitor(yes i should get a life) and looking at this release they would have needed divine intervention to have met the stated release date, this strikes me as a double wammy they get a huge amount of publicity (you could not buy the amount they got for this) and they get to use it as an excuse to move their predicted release date without looking like they lied. If we all face facts here no matter what protection or media format they use when this game comes out its going to be pirated (if you can make it you can break it)and i am sure the realease of a far from completed beta will not make the slightest difference to the sales of the completed version but from what i have read about Valve in the media they seem to be getting like every other big company all they want is money money money and i find it very hard to feel sympathy for them , people in groups like Anon And Razor are going to target big money making companies such as Valve and ID because they symbalise everything they hate it has always been a Robin Hood thing stealing from the rich to feed the poor and it will never change. I hear you cry what is the point in this post well i will tell you piracy is sucking the life blood out of the games industry and eventually 90%developers are going to throw the towel in and we will all be left with 200 games a year to choose from not 2000 this may be a good thing and the 200 games produced will be worth buying?? do we want choice or quality?? would it make the slightest bit of difference to game prices if piracy was stopped?? when cd writers were £2000 and blanks were £7.50 was piracy as bad?? are the manufacturers of these to blame??
