The chaps over at
TCMagazine take a look at
how some of today's cutting edge gaming GPUs handle the latest Grand Theft Auto.
Word is: "We have some quality hardware on trial today, powered by none other
than AMD's X2 monster dual core cpu. Without further ado, let's see how GTA: San
Andreas handles these GPU homies come to take it down. The Contenders: GeForce
5200, GeForce 6200, GeForce 6800, Radeon 9800, Radeon X700LE, Radeon x800xl and
the Radeon x850xt pe!"
The results were interesting, and showed yet again the futility of blindly
reaching for the top cards. Unless you're seriously into gaming, and absolutely
need to have the highest bragging rights on the market, then the 850XT is way
too much money for average gamers. The 800XL makes a lot more sense, as we
already found out in
a previous article. The real surprises of the show were, however, two almost
forgotten GPUs, in the endless flurry of new-generation releases. The good old
trusty Radeon 9800 gave an excellent accounting of itself, and is available at a
fraction of the price of its competitors. nVidia's much reviled 6800, which was
completely overshadowed at birth by its 6800GT sibling, also performed extremely
well, providing astounding performance for its value. Those pixel pipelines do
tell.
