Google announces Chrome based Operating System - tech
(hx) 12:52 PM CEST - Jul,08 2009 - Post a comment / read (14)
Google has officially announced that they plan to release a Chrome based OS. Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Google plans to open-source its code later this year and offer Google powered netbooks in 2010. Company officials confirmed that Google Chrome OS will run on both x86 as well as ARM chips. Google is currently working with multiple OEMs to bring a number of netbooks to market next year bundled with the new Chrome OS.
Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because we're already talking to partners about the project, and we'll soon be working with the open source community, we wanted to share our vision now so everyone understands what we are trying to achieve.

Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. We're designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds. The user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the web. And as we did for the Google Chrome browser, we are going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don't have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. It should just work.

Google Chrome OS will run on both x86 as well as ARM chips and we are working with multiple OEMs to bring a number of netbooks to market next year. The software architecture is simple — Google Chrome running within a new windowing system on top of a Linux kernel. For application developers, the web is the platform. All web-based applications will automatically work and new applications can be written using your favorite web technologies. And of course, these apps will run not only on Google Chrome OS, but on any standards-based browser on Windows, Mac and Linux thereby giving developers the largest user base of any platform.

Google Chrome OS is a new project, separate from Android. Android was designed from the beginning to work across a variety of devices from phones to set-top boxes to netbooks. Google Chrome OS is being created for people who spend most of their time on the web, and is being designed to power computers ranging from small netbooks to full-size desktop systems. While there are areas where Google Chrome OS and Android overlap, we believe choice will drive innovation for the benefit of everyone, including Google.

That's just awesome! Google behind an OS? M$ may finally get some decent competition as far as X86 OSes are concerned.

I hope it grows fast and they include OpenGL 3.0, OpenCL and some game support at a later time!

I kind of expected Google to step in with a fully-fledged OS (not Android) at some point. But still, that was unexpected! Caught me completely off-guard.

Great move, I hope Google cam make a difference. Oh, man! Great times! =)

Chrome OS, god give me a break! The browser sucks and now we have a crap OS coming in. Great...If you seriously believe this OS will dent MS in any way you are seriously dreaming. LOL!

Ozieo(07:07 PM CEST - Jul,08 2009 )
O come on, don't take that too serious.
Linux is trying to get a market for some 20 years too,
and you can count the numbers of their users on both hands.
No software makers will ever take it serious, so even if it is as
crap as crap can be, who cares ?

Koogle(07:57 PM CEST - Jul,08 2009 )
if its anything like the chrome browser it will be weak and shit.. offer very little value in decent features... most the features it does have are basic as they can't even get those done right.. poor browsing experience and a total lack decent of options or customization.. but it will be fast, and that will be enough for the noobs that do use it.. cus they don't need actual useful features just the bare bones shit and good benchmark scores.

oh and they'll have multiple versions of GoogleUpdate.exe running in the background monitoring you.. I mean things :)

anyway .. some company has got to give Microshit a good ass kicking.. Windows 7 is pretty much..I MEAN IS the same junk as Vis7a, and Apple are hardly making Microsoft pull the finger.. if anything its just making MS target the same noob crowd Apple goes after with the poorly designed crap and barely customizable features.. .. like the same similar shit oversized iconed useless noob taskbar etc etc etc etc.. they have barely improved anything! least of all the core Explorer.. and with useless competition like Apple and Linux I guess they don't have too..

Win7 I don't even get the point of it. Slightly different gui that's about it. PB not supported, games don't run any better and now even more complicated for games because of directx 11. When I ran win7 i'd spend lots of time messing with compatibility options and apps that didn't recognize the OS as supported. It's no wonder it's going for so cheap. Catch all the n00bs who think it's superior I guess.

Oh, yeah! Now that you used "noob", "junk", "useless" and similar words each a thousand time, NOW you're a guru and certainly know all there is to know about OSs.
I'm not a guru too, but if all you do is BASH someone's gigantic and actually invaluable work... well, that says something. =)

And, man! No one said google is suddenly gonna do an ultra-pwning desktop OS. It's like when they announced Android and said "we're gonna do an OS for mobiles" everybody would say "Damn google idiots! I can't run it on my desktop for my daily work! It's complete shit!". It'll be good at what it's aimed at. You can't say it's shit because of the lack of things it wasn't even supposed to do.

And yeah, I seriously believe that in 10 years Google might actually bite a serious market share off Microsoft's netbook and laptop pie. Google has got brains, resources, good business ethics and goodwill to actually make it happen. So laugh all you want.

nb411(04:36 AM CEST - Jul,09 2009 )
Even if it never topples microsoft, it will have the effect of making them work harder than ever to stay on top for as long as it is a threat. That is, the effect of this may just be that Microsoft OSs become better than they otherwise may have been without the blowtorch of competition under their arses.

strangestsensation(07:52 AM CEST - Jul,09 2009 )
Don't cry because I couldn't give a shit about Google crap bud. Other than their search engine and their email I use as a spam filter I don't give jack shit about anything they do really. Now calm down don't have a sissy fit. You wont change my mind.

Nosferatu(12:31 PM CEST - Jul,09 2009 )
Haha, funny pics! Never saw them before. Nice =)

You don't actually have to remind me to calm down. I'm ok with what YOU think. No "sissy fits" here. It's just that you're too emotional (all the crap, noob etc words) about all the "Google crap". That's odd for me. Maybe you're just so emotional about everything you don't like. I dunno. Anyway, that's ok with me.

And even if any google soft is crap for you, nb411 is right -- competition never hurts in this industry. We will benefit from their rivalry in the end. So it's positive news no matter how you look at it [oh, IMHO, of course].

I'm emotional? LOL! Holy cow man you crack me up. Yeah I was emotional only in the sense of laughing my ass off at your emotionally charged post. Glad you liked the pics, they were just for added humor. It looked like you needed a laugh.

If I wanted a crippled netbook then I'd buy a Kindle.

Nosferatu(04:49 AM CEST - Jul,10 2009 )
Damn you "internet men"! =) They always think you're flaming, too emotional or whatnot. Nevermind.

HX, what do YOU think? It'd be nice to see you commenting too =)

My opinion...hard to say :-) Seriously, I don't think we badly need another Linux based distro. We already have Ubuntu for desktop use, for servers we have Debian, and for netbooks Intel Moblin. We simply don't need another fork named Chrome OS (which I guess it will be similar to gOS, but with additional features to make it a true web OS (synchronization capabilities, fast booting...))

No other side, it's good that there's choice....
