Gearbox Head Defends In-Game Ads Deal - briefly
(hx) 11:21 AM CEST - Mar,30 2008 - Post a comment / read (7)
A couple of days ago it was announced that Gearbox Software directly made a deal with Double Fusion to handle the in game advertising for their upcoming game releases. Now Randy Pitchford of Gearbox Software has posted an update regarding the in-game advertising. Do you agree that if in-game advertising is done tastefully, then it won't affect a player's overall experience? In my opinion, if in game advertising doesn't lead to a lower price for the consumer, then it's bullshit.
We respect any contempt for exploitive advertising that negatively effects the integrity or the quality of the game because we, as hardcore gamers, share that same contempt. If anything, that's a big understatement. I'll say it again: We hate exploitive advertising that doesn't offer value to the gamer.

We partnered with Double Fusion because we believe they approach this kind of thing with the right attitude and because we wanted to be in control of these kinds of decisions for some of our games. It is important for us to ensure that we're able to keep our artistic interests in mind and that our gamer customers' interests are cared for.

As of this post we haven't committed to any particular in-game advertising for any of our upcoming titles (including Hell's Highway, Aliens: Colonial Marines, and Borderlands). What we've done is to enable Double Fusion to connect us with opportunities. If this leads to anything, we intend for the results to bring you advantages that can increase the quality of our games, including improved authenticity, increased budgets, or out-of-game promotion that helps attract more gamers.

Bollocks! If someone advertises products for someone else; motor sports, boxing or golf they are *paid* to do so. If this is in a piece of software then it's the developer/publisher who get the cut and the gamer still pays FULL price.
Why not state, "it means we can sell the game to YOU at half retail price, for allowing us to advertise on your PC".
Can't do that, can they......

What another load of toss! Where will it *state* on the game box that this will happen? Instead it goes straight into the CEO/heads of dept pockets -just like ALL companies do.
It's purely for their gain at the expense of the gamer as a mobile advertising platform.

I just hope these people know they are treading on thin ice. If only there was no ice at all and they could just drown.

All it will take is one step too far, and the backlash will be terrible.

I'm prepared to stop gaming if all my games become a new outlet for these marketers and their disappearing markets.

There's a reason that people fast-forward through commercials with their DVRs. Theres a reason why people use adblock and other plugins to clean ads from their browsers. There's a reason why people simply switch radio stations when the ads come on.

People hate being annoyed by your "recommendations" to try your product or service. If we want to know which product or service to use, we'll ask each other, not rely on you!!!

well in some cases its "allowed" in my book. for instance sport and racing games where theres adverts in real life as well. In that case it adds to the autenticity of the game.
In case of a game like DOOM having huge banners adverticing for dogs food or v1agr4.. it wouldnt work of course :P
It can be done in sober and proper ways, then i wouldnt mind.

i agree, if it dosnt lead to lower prices then it is bullshit. its that simple kids, we pay for games FULL PRICE and we dont pay for INGAME ADS we play for the original gamplay experience..

but were not going to get a say in whats going to happen..

why? money thats all they want.. fucking world is turning to hell..i hate ads we see over 500 ads a day ( people that have lifes)

its fine with it as long as its not 'explosive' as they say. I understand why they have to do this, and its mostly because of the bastards of people who pirate games out there. A company can't survive on a few honest gamers regardless of the full price they pay, its the majority of r-tards that kill good companys by pirating, sort of like how the music industry dying compared to what it used to be before piracy was so rampant.

the included "screenshot is annoying" if it's gonna be like that it'll look like american highways in no time. full of adverts and banners.

well i learned my lesson by trusting a game DEMO, so now i download the pirated game, and if i like it ill buy it if i dont i simply uninstall it.. ( hellgate London)

im sorry but alot of games dont come out with demos or there demos arnt what the real game is. i think thats what the case is for most gamers. simply your ripped off but you dont know till you buy the full product.

but you say there not making money because of people that only download the pirated games? bull shit every major game developer profited last year and the year after that.. that means everyone got paid and they got alot more on top of that... they just want MORE.
