has a transcript up from an IRC session last night with Randy Pitchford
(CEO), Leo Sieben (programmer), Patrick Blank (lead level designer), Carl Shedd
(level designer), Jason Reiss (level designer), Scott Jordan (level designer),
Ben Nitschke (QA lead), and Scott Dudley (Online Architect). There are also some
pictures of the famous Gearbox Snack Room at the end of the transcript (the room
was mentioned a couple times in the chat :) )
ennui: QUESTION: what is a regular workday like at Gearbox? Is working at a
video game company much different than anywhere else?
Leo Sieben: i can't speak for other studios
Leo Sieben: but for here! there's no set hours!
Patrick Deupree: Working at a game company is definately different than
working for a non-game company.
Jason Reiss: Gearbox = teh Awesome
Patrick Deupree: The main difference is that you actually have a product
that "has" to be released by so and such a date, whereas other jobs might have a
project in infinite development.
Scott Dudley: get in around 5:00 am... sip some coffee... feed the
chickens... check on the monkies... around 10:00 or so we jump in the old ford
truck and head out to the back 40 where we occationally have to fix fences or
round up a stray calf... long about noon we break for lunch...
Leo Sieben: This way, everyone's creativity is fostered and encouraged to
develop in its most natural way.
Patrick Deupree: That being the case, work hours vary. As an example,
toward the end of Road to Hill 30, and Earned in Blood, work hours were long.
Leo Sieben: Lots of Saturdays, and sundays!
Patrick Deupree: However, working in the early part of a project now,
work hours are normal.
Patrick Blank: Regular work day here is really laid back. We have alot of
fun. I just listen to music and work in the editor(when not in meetings). Even
when there is alot to do, and deadlines to meet, it's still the best job in the
world. Every office you walk into, you get to see really cool things that people
are working on that will eventially all come together.
Leo Sieben: Yes, get here when you want, but put in 8 hours of honest
work
Jason Reiss: I can definitely say that working at Gerabox is really cool
because of the free creative power that they give their employee's. Gearbox
understands that we are all here to make videogames and to make something fun,
so all of that energy is completely harnessed
Patrick Deupree: As was mentioned, work hours vary but I would say the
majority of people are here around 10, and leave whenever (6, 7, 10, etc). ;)
Patrick Deupree: I worked at one game company that was in perpetual
crunch (projects with 6 to 9 month schedules). Those hours sucked.
Scott Dudley: It's hard to find a time when no-one is at the office.. I
came in one morning to find Fred still banging away at his machine from the day
before... and he wasn't even crunching...
Scott Dudley: some folks just won't go home
Leo Sieben: That speaks to the kind of environment we have here at gbx
Leo Sieben: everyones work is appreciated, not just by fans, but by
managers, leads, etc.
Leo Sieben: so everyone takes more pride in their work
Leo Sieben: they want it to be the best they can make it. =) We're very
dedicated
