Gates: Xbox is a PC - briefly
(hx) 11:20 PM CET - Jan,08 2007 - Post a comment / read (3)
Kotaku reports that Microsoft head man Bill Gate stated that their Xbox 360 is more than just a game console: "The reason we got into Xbox was not just for gaming," he said. "It's a general purpose computer. In terms of the first generation in particular, where we were so known as a PC company, the need to make clear how we were prioritizing the needs of demanding gamers, that was super important." "We wouldn't have done it if it was just a gaming device," he said. "We wouldn't have gone into the category at all. It was strategically getting into the living room. This is not some big secret, Sony says the same things." Gates also added that they are not abandoning the PC for gaming: "I can stick up for both the PC model where you don't pay any royalties, you can introduce games without asking anybody, that's a great thing. And you will see a lot of innovation," he said. "PC gaming is where you will see that really cutting edge high-end type stuff happening. As the Xbox gets cheaper and cheaper some very cool things happen there."

Update1: Microsoft today confirmed what was earlier reported by Takahashi -- the Xbox 360 will not only serve as a game console, Media Center Extender and a portal for TV show/movie downloads, but it will also serve as an IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) device. Although Microsoft made no official announcement of providers for IPTV service on the Xbox 360, AT&T already uses Microsoft IPTV software and is likely to jump onboard. And with services like video-on-demand (VOD) and digital video recording likely to be provided, it makes perfect sense that Microsoft would be likely be pushing a larger 120GB hard drive instead of the "paltry" 20GB currently in service.

Update2: While many had hoped that Bill Gates would announce plans for a PC version of Gears of War during his CES keynote, it looks like another Xbox 360 exclusive will be making the jump. Geometry Wars, the most popular Xbox Live Arcade title appears to be headed the PC. The game is shown running on a laptop during the "Games for Windows" segment of the keynote, although it's unclear when Geometry Wars will be released and whether it will require Windows Vista. No word on timing or price, but it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect it to land this year for between $5 (the price on XBLA) and $20 (the price for most "casual" PC games).

What have I been saying? To discredit Xbox as the next most viable gaming platform when compared to the cost of PC video cards alone is just crazy. I see absolutely no rationale to pay what ATI and nVidia want. Once I can afford to get an Xbox 360 the PC will be nothing more than a tool for sending e-mail and downloading movies and music. :)

Anyone remember how vehemently Bill gates denied that the original Xbox was nothing more than a game playing PC? And now we hear it was his plan all along, as if it wasn't obvious, though I find this announcement rather amusing :)

Singularity - PC, PS3, Xbox 360 - Raven have stated that Singularity's main gameplay mechanism is a device, known in the game as the TMD (Time Manipulation Device). The TMD has the ability to move a single object through time, both into the future, and into the past. It can also freeze an object in time, and has an 'Impulse' function, which can be used as a weapon once upgraded. The TMD is multifunctional, as it can be used as a powerful weapon, but also as a tool in puzzle solving scenarios. The device's use as a weapon is unconventional when compared to the weapons in other games. For instance, using the TMD's "rewind" function on a human opponent will send them into a "placental" state where they revert to an almost amoebic state, before slowly dying. The device is essential for solving puzzles, such as sending a lock forward in time, causing it to rust it in real time, or sending a broken bridge backwards in time until it returns to a usable state. Sending a tree trunk forwards in time while standing on it will cause it grow very quickly, allowing the player to reach higher areas. (698 hits)
