Gabe Newell on HL2 Pay to Play Rumors - briefly
(hx) 04:32 PM CEST - Sep,03 2003 - Post a comment / read (9)
Planet Half-Life has posted lengthy email from Valve Software's Gabe Newell to a fan revealing that there will be three different versions of Half-Life 2 when it is released:
Q:: As I'm sure you are aware the HL2 community is going crazy with the rumour that HL2 is going to be like a MMORPG and you will have to pay a fee each month via Steam to play HL2 multiplayer. I don't believe this to be true but can you please put it to rest once and for all. PLEEEEEEASE.

Gabe Newell: Here's my current thinking: Some people want to buy Half-Life 2 in a store. Right now we have three SKUs planned at three price points. One will have single-player only and not play MODs and we think of that as the mass market SKU (sold mainly at the Costcos and Walmarts of the world). The second is our traditional single-player plus multiplayer SKU that runs MODs and is sold at places like EBX. The third is the collector's edition SKU with lots of cool bonus stuff for people who like cool bonus stuff.

In the Steam world, some people will want to buy it once, like the middle SKU above. Other people will want to buy the game on subscription (e.g. $9.95/month). The good news for the "buy it once" crowd is, well, they only have to pay once. The bad news is that when we come out with new content (expansion products, TF 2, and presumably other games) then they have to pay separately for those. We're pretty sure that the $9.95 guys are going to get the better value, as we've been pretty good over the years at generating a lot of content.

Now nobody has done this before, so we're scratching our heads and massaging the plans to make sure we've got the best set of options. We've had some feedback that we should sell the top SKU (single-player only no MODs) on Steam, and my reaction has been "yeah, right, for the three people in the world who have a broadband connection, are sophisticated enough to purchase software over the Internet, but DON'T want to play MODs and multiplayer". Some people have said "I want a subscription, but I think the box and the manual are cool, so what about sending me those" and I think that's pretty interesting and we're trying to figure out what to do for them (needless to say Sierra isn't exactly jumping for joy at the idea of selling us boxes so people don't buy Half-Life 2 in stores).

But nowhere has there been a suggestion that people pay in the store and then pay a monthly fee on top of that a la the MMORPG.

GOOD! if there was a subscription fee to play Half Life 2 MP, then i would spend my money elsewhere because NO game at all is worth paying to play. If Blizzard decided to make Diablo II pay as you play, then i would throw the game in the bin.....i love the game, but i would NEVER, EVER pay to play a game. NO GAME IS WORTH PAYING TO PLAY!!

I am actually concerned about paying for mods. If the user community creates mods and wants them to be free, why should we pay for them? I hope that we don't have to pay for patches either. There is no way a customer should pay for the flaws that a company produces. I am unsure of how much content that Valve has actually created over the years. So far, official Valve expansion packs are: TFC and the Quake 1 mod. What else has Valve created? Most of the work, as far as I can tell, is purely from the community and it's generosity and hard work.

I think they meant, the mods they make, but it shows how much they are desperate for money. They better not ruin a possible best game ever by making people pay to play the mods. It is understandable that you need to pay to get it, but paying to play it, is a big no, no.

Newell can blow me. There's no point in paying Valve or anyone more than once for a game. Nor is there any reason why you should pay extra for multiplayer and mods, which have always traditionally been part of the basic price. What greed!

i completely agree. but you have to admit, games cost millions to make, especially like Half Life 2, so they got to get their money somehow.

Pay to play is just idiotic, should be able to buy the expansions one time and one time only to play them as much as you want, If I'm going to spend my time playing their game, they better make it worth my while too. I used to hold valve in higher regard but this has lowered my opinion of them.

Maybe it's not clear... the game will come in 3 flavours - SP only - SP+MP & MODS - Collector's Edition Via Steam there'll be a monthly fee version too. Nobody talks about pay per play or pay for mods. Just different prices for different versions of the same game.

i'm happy with the 3 flavours, and thankful no bs MMORPG is coming out, just doesnt seem worthy for ppl who live outside the network and have to play such games with a 400 ping :| thou a SP only version seems to be very deceptive, I surely hope they dont get flamed by jokers who purchase the SP version thinkin' its the SP+MP version.

Well, if they don't make CS2 a stand-alone and free to play, i will just get the SP version of Half Life 2.
