Gabe Newell not happy with next-gen consoles - briefly
(hx) 10:58 PM CEST - Jul,25 2005 - Post a comment / read (6)
Gabe Newell, the big boss at Valve Software, isn't much thrilled with making games (thanks Joystiq) for the upcoming Xbox 360 / PlayStation 3 consoles. Here he explains why he feels sorry for both the developers of next-generation games and the customers too:
"Technologically, I think every game developer should be terrified of the next generation of processors. Your existing code, you can just throw it away. It's not going to be helpful in creating next generation game titles," said Newell.

"Most of the problems of getting these systems running on these multicore processors are not solved. They are doctoral theses, not known implementation problems. So it's not even clear that over the lifespan of these next generation systems that they will be solved problems. The amount of time it takes to get a good multicore engine running, the Xbox 360 might not even be on the market any longer. That should scare the crap out of everybody."
Newell is also scathing about hardware manufacturer claims regarding the performance:
"Statements about 'Oh, the PS3 is going to be twice as fast as an Xbox 360' are totally meaningless . It means nothing. It's surprising that game customers don't realize how it treats them like idiots. The assumption is that you're going to swallow that kind of system, when in fact there's no code that has been run on both of those architectures that is anything close to a realistic proxy for game performance. So to make a statement like that, I'm worried for the customers. And that we view customers as complete morons that will never catch on and that we're lying to them all the time. That's a problem because in the long run, it will have an impact on our sales."

oh gees this guy must be speaking from experience
ill try to forget that they fucked up cs, that they claimed they would rip cs and the other mods from cheater once steam would be released, the whole hogus bogus crap about delaying hl2 because of the leaked beta, the rotten bad and i think gone gold 3 times wierd cs-z(yeah i know wasnt developed by em anyway) and the admitted great athmospere and astonishing gfx of hl2, while none to minor changes in gameplay close to no story, no charekter development, at least none to speak of, and the probably most aprubt ending of an game in the last 5 years.
didnt this guy give an interview with homelan i think like a year before hl2 was released that the stuff of the realeased movies wasnt scriptet and that it was more like that every npc would be aware of his suroundings...?
wich was bullcrap of course and even though i admit it can be a pain in the ass to go multi core especially if your company is mainly focused on the game engines (let face it valve has realesed 2 games and 3 expansion packs till now thats it) like valve. sony already includes a trial of an working engine in its sdk, and we ll probably see a lot more licensing of engines with the next gens.
i think that kojima is right in his interview he gave on the e3 that youll just have to prioritizes where to put the man power of your team in the development. if the art work or the overall game design or the engine will be most important. of course if 80% of your money do go to engine development going multi core hits you harder then others...

It's definitely a risk factor. Both the Xbox 360 and PS3 appear to be incredibly powerful, and I'd guess it will take years for software developers to fully exploit their potential. Truth is, most developers are smart and will find effective solutions to the code optimization and technical problems.

Gabe, put a sock in it, nobody's interessted in what you have to say ...

Of all people, it had to be Gabe that pointed out that developpers (and shit) lie to customers ....

What a world what a world.

Guess again, guys.

In Newell's comments, you're getting the perspective of someone whose company can *afford* to say FU to Microsoft and Sony. Valve can do that. Valve has just done that.

There's a difference between between slavish marketing BS and an *independent perspective* in business that tells billionaires when they're full of shit and lying. The former's cheap and easy and every corporate suck-up does it. The latter?

Like it or not, Valve is the last important, powerful *independent* design house in gaming--the only one not whoring for PS3/Xbox2. Yeah, that matters.

i dont see anything important about it... there where others before him saying it will be hard to go multi threading, this discussen already startet when the pentium hts were introduced even though its not fully comparable, that both microsoft and sony exaggerate about their product well big news, if you run through the world sheepishly thinking big corprates tell you the truth about their product, you got a problem. and again valve has in 7 years (development time for half life 1 not including) realeased 2 aaa titles. that isent exactly much considering the amount of cash they got through hl1.
but that he off all telling them they cant treat costumers like morons while his company fucked their game comunity and therefor their costumers in the ass big time on more then one occasion is simply rediculous.
i dont get the whoring thing either. ok the new consoles will look good ...now... in 6 years everything you see now and every thing wich will be possible with the new consoles will be rotten bad gfx thats the way it goes. and if they dont deliver a quality product with quality games people wont buy it.. i certanly wont buy any console till i saw the first game reviews on tv...

Shaidar

I'm with ya bud, Gabe and his buddies are some of the biggest liars out there, imo. Not only that but their support totally sucks and they got a live system to deliver patches. Funny Gabe would be saying "other" developers are liars. Pfffff. Hey Gabe, don't forget you released DM and it's featureless unlike your little hush puppy HeadShots For Everyone game...When I first started playing CS Source it was great game and then when I went back to 1.6 I realized how much of a POS CS Source is. Rewards spray and pray and makes bad players good, just not worth the time.
