Friday TechReading - Microsoft Hits Vista RC1 - tech
(hx) 02:57 AM CEST - Sep,02 2006 - Post a comment / read (1)
  • Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 and E6700 Overclocking Performance - The E6300 offered even more overclocking headroom, as it went from 1.86GHz to 3.03GHz using nothing more than the XP-120 with a 2500-RPM 120mm fan.
  • Abit's new Core2Duo MAX board -  It has all of the right ingredients to become the next IC7-MAX3 - it just needs some time to mature.
  • ECS KA3-MVP vs. MSI K9A Platinum - PCPerspective's latest review pits the ECS KA3-MVP against the MSI K9A Platinum in a battle of the XPress 3200 chipset motherboards.
  • Shuttle rolls out Core 2 Duo SFF computer - Shuttle has rolled out their newest small form factor computer built specially for Intel's Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Extreme processors. Running the 975X Express chipset, the Shuttle P2 3700 can support up to 8 GB of RAM and four hard drives. There's even enough space to dual PCI Express graphics cards.
  • MSI NX7300GS-TD256E GeForce 7300 GS 256MiB - HEXUS has posted a review on the MSI NX7300GS-TD256E GeForce 7300 GS 256MiB. "MSI's NX7300GS-TD256E seems to manage just about acceptable framerates when using a resolution of 1024x768 and might even be tolerable in certain games at 1280x1024. Play around with the settings a bit, sacrifice some of the fancier rendering features and it should cope with the majority of current games."
  • AGP Graphics Card Group Test - Both Battlefield 2 and Prey showed exactly the same trends. 3DMark06 summed things up nicely, with the 7800 GS and 7600 GT getting an almost identical score, and the 7600 GS and X1600 Pro getting an almost identical score. At 1,920 x 1,200, we see the 7600 GT performing faster than the 7800 GS, and the X1600 Pro coping a lot better than the 7600 GS.
  • Desktop Graphics Card Comparison Guide Rev. 11.3 - Tech ARP posted rev. 11.3 of their Desktop Graphics Card Comparison Guide.
  • Passive Cooling Versus Active Cooling - If you are looking for a virtually silent CPU cooling solution that doesn't add another fan to your system, but instead makes use of an existing rear case fan, the HR-01 used with the Thermalright Fan Duct is a great combination!
  • Pretec announces 16GB USB stick - Pretec is the first company to announce a device that packs 16GB of storage space into the form factor of a common USB Flash stick. Pretec will be offering the drive at the end of this month in Europe for about $640. The 8 GB model will be sold for $205. And if the mainstream 2 GB models are enough, than you can get such Flash sticks for around $40, according to data provided by Pricegrabber.
  • Pioneer to release Dual format HD-DVD / Blu-Ray Writer - Pioneer will soon be following up its current next generation Blu-ray writer with a model that supports Dual Layer Blu-Ray media the BDR-102.
  • Microsoft Hits Vista RC1 - On Sept. 1, Microsoft began making available for download to the first of an estimated 6 million testers the last public build of its next-generation Windows client. Now it's a race to the finish line.
  • Firefox 2.0 Beta 2 - All you Firefox users interested in playing around with the latest 2.0 beta should hit this download link (5.6MB).
  • Windows Media Player 11 Beta 2 - Microsoft has released the second beta of Windows Media Player 11 (download) for all of you interested. The new version features media-sharing abilities that allow a user to share content with multiple devices within th
  • Realtek AC'97 Drivers 3.92 WHQL - The driver supports all ALC series audio chipsets from ALC100 up to ALC861 mainly used as onboard sound on various motherboards.
  • Logitech SetPoint 3.01 drivers - If you were using Logitech MouseWare with a Cordless Click! or a Cordless Click! Plus mouse, installing SetPoint on top of MouseWare will transfer control of your mouse from MouseWare to SetPoint. I've heard this one fixed my problem with the erratic cursor on the mxlaser 1000 mouse that comes with the mx 5000 keyboard. (thanks XXXX)
  • Browser To Browser File Swapping - The new service lets you send large files across the Net simply by dragging them onto your browser window. You can't send to someone unless they've installed AllPeers' app too, but once both of you have everything set up, you can zip files back and forth with ease.
  • ISPs Fight Against Encrypted BitTorrent Downloads - Now, a company called Allot Communications is claiming that their new hardware product, the NetEnforcer, is the first device that will seek out and throttle encrypted BitTorrent traffic. According to a spokesperson for the company, the NetEnforcer utilizes deep packet inspection technology "to identify and analyze hundreds of applications and protocols, track subscriber behavior, prioritize traffic and shape traffic flows."
  • Net browser promises private surf - Browzar, as it is known, automatically deletes all records of the pages a person has visited when it closes down.
  • Google Image Labeler - "Welcome to Google Image Labeler, a new feature of Google Image Search that allows you to label random images to help improve the quality of Google's image search results." This is the new tagger that they had in mind! - It seems to me that google is training a neural network :-D
  • Why Not Ship New PCs with XP and Vista Both? - David Morgenstern, over on eWEEK, wonders aloud why Microsoft isn't taking a page out of the Apple playbook by allowing new PCs to ship with both XP and Vista. When Mac OS X came onto the scene, Apple was shipping Macs with both Mac OS 9.1 and Mac OS X preloaded. Apple continued offering both operating systems for a year and a half.

  • TDK shows off 200 GB Blu-ray disc - TDK has announced a prototype Blu-ray disc that can store a massive 200 GB of data. The 200 GB disc will be protected by a hard coating called DURABIS2. The coating stands up to the industry's steel wool rubbing test and resists dust, scratches and fingerprints. TDK also said lower capacity 50 GB discs will start selling next week.
  • Samsung Breaks the 4G Barrier - The company had two 4G demonstrations. A mobile stunt entailed providing delegates on a specially designed bus with a live broadcast of the forum, Internet access, and video on demand, all simultaneously at speeds of 100Mbps. Inside the forum venue, Samsung showed off its 1Gbps 4G service with 32 HD channel broadcast downloads, Internet access, and video telephony.
  • Nokia serves up workhorse email handset - The list of email clients which the E50 supposedly supports straight out of the box is impressive indeed. It includes the new 'Activesync Mail for Exchange' client. That's the result of Nokia's recent decision to licence Activesync technology from the Beast of Redmond, naturally.
  • Lockheed Martin to Build Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle - Yesterday it was announced that Lockheed Martin would be responsible for building the vehicle that will be pivotal in once again landing Americans back on the moon. The Orion CEV contract is worth an estimated $4 billion USD.
  • 'Suicide bomber' flew on RP plane - A Man wearing a jacket and carrying a bag was able to sneak a bomb onto a flight from Manila to Davao City last month at the height of the nationwide security alert after Britain uncovered a plot to blow up transatlantic planes. The man pulled off the same stunt on the return flight to Manila
  • Carrey & Diaz Reunite for Muccino's Game - FilmJerk has learned that Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz will reunite for Italian director Gabriele Muccino's (The Pursuit of Happyness) next project, A Little Game Without Consequence at Focus Features. And nVidia is pushing the envelope with the new drivers for XP as well as a new kit for Vista which seems to have full OpenGL compability among other things which should fix a good aweful lot of problems :P

Yay! Their FTP was even "a bit" loaded when I tried to get me download earlier today - did manage it though after awhile.

AAAAAAND I can't see anything new on the aTI site regarding new drivers... Not that it matters for me eitherway.
