FBI Raids Over HL2 Source - briefly
(hx) 09:51 PM CET - Jan,19 2004 - Post a comment / read (14)
According to a recent weblog post, a San Francisco native had his house raided by the FBI last week, and 'lost upwards of 9 machines, and lots of misc equipment besides' in a seizure related to the theft of the Half-Life 2 source code from Valve Software (thanks Slashdot.org)
I was questioned by the FBI agent in charge and a Secret Service agent at length about the Hungry Programmers, people I used to live with, whether particular people had the capacity/knowledge to do what they were investigating, etc. During the questioning she says "Now we're going to take all your computers." She sees the look on my face and says "Yeah, this is going to be hard for you." I said "uh, when will I get them back?" She said it depends, that they'd try to have them all back as soon as possible, but it depends on if they find anything suspicious on them. If they found contraband (kiddie porn, talk of drugs, or stuff they were actually looking for), that particular computer would never be coming home.

After the questioning I basically sat in the front room on a folded futon mattress, with at least one agent with me at all times. Sometimes two. At one point I said I really needed to brush my teeth and the SS agent assigned to me at the time walked with me back to the bathroom and stood behind me watching me in the mirror as I brushed my teeth. On my way back down the hall I looked into my room and saw 3 FBI agents rifling through my belongings. One looking at the condoms and stickers in my nightstand, one going through my underwear/sock drawer, and one looking through my books.

Ok ok...I understand people want to defend this guy...but what the crap? what if he really is the theif? I mean people talk about conspircy...I dont think valve would go as far as this if it was. I mean its a video game. Anyways ubarific if its the theif...if it's a mistake...then u cant really blame them....i mean its the United States FBI..when have they been right?!

How does anyone know that he got raided for HL2 source. I see nowhere other than Slashdot making a claim of this and the homo who wrote up a story of what happened. Sounds like a tonne of Bs that Valve would be able to get the FBI to search a guys house 'suspected' or stealing the source. And if he did steal the code he should go to jail. Period. And Valve is one shit company to have some punk infiltrate his e-mail account and webmail account and then steal the source. These guys make games and they can't even secure their network.. Good one Valve. First it's BS media of their game that gets exposed to the public. One message to Gabe is learn how to update your software. A trojan nobody ever seen.. Pfff.. what a joke. And what is Gabe doing going out of the office leaving his machine on at work. How dumb you have to be??

The FBI usually does a good job of catching who they're looking for. Name one time when they didn't. All of this crap going down is an excuse Valve is using to justify delays. If anyone has seen the copy that was stolen they would know the game wasn't even near completion when this theft occured.

I for some strange reason agree that this is some elabrate hoax by valve to justify delaying HL2.This so called capture is there way of wraping up the finally.Watch, the game will come out in april...Of course pure specuation.

"The FBI usually does a good job of catching who they're looking for." You're shitting me right? Two words. Waco, Texas.

xxx If you read the warrant provided in jpg format pages 4 and 5 makes references to HL2 and Valve

fbi always get their man..........always

"Waco, Texas" what a wod, The FBI asked them too come out and they refused, by refusing they started the chain of events that was too follow. Are people that bored with their exsistance to assume everything is a conspircy, If the FBI raided this guys house (IF IT's TRUE) then there is a freaking good chance he's involved. Not likely that they will bust in a door only to find out it's the wrong adress

valve is a lil' crybaby .. needs to call the fbi for help hrhr just to get some nice, half-innocent leaker-freak into jail. they should just ignore what happened and don't destroy someones life, since they're going to make a ton of money with the hl2 release anyways...fuck!

stumpusposted - Jan, 20 2004 - 15:23
LOL they traced his IP address probably for downloading kiddie porn and this muppet makes up an excuse that it's related to HL-2. Whatever, the FBI hardly go charging into someones house *without* a solid reason and backup. There's more to this than what this 'bleedin' heart kid' is telling.

Hal, thanks. Didn't see more than the confiscated items and the long drawn out overillustrated fairy tale. Thanks for pointing that out. Hope they hang this guy if it is him. No remorse for kiddy hackers. Be nice to get a story of him in jail with a big hairy 500pound guy as a cellmate.

what a load of bs. the FBI is not going to waste thier time trying to catch a guy who stole a engine code over the internet. thats not even a federal crime. that should be a dead give a way. if that wasn't then the fact he was talking about secret service agents and illegal searches should. they would give him a warrant if they even did think it was this moron, and his name would be all over the news. this sounds like some 8 year old kid trying to make a name out of himself.

joe mamaposted - Jan, 22 2004 - 02:38
why is everyone buying into this conspiracy theory with the source engine? it doesn't make sense to me that valve would purposely lie to buy some extra developement time. they are already going to take a huge loss from not releasing halflife 2 on its official date. i agree its wierd some 1 got away with the entire code for the engine, but to make it up? thats just dumb. i believe that valve was hit by a hacker and this is just more proof that low lifes who don't wanna pay the $45 for a game just make things worse for everybody.
