'Father of DirectX' talks Microsoft and gaming - interview
(hx) 01:09 PM CEST - Mar,30 2007 - Post a comment / read (12)
The chaps over at Shacknews have had a chance to sit down and interview Alex St. John, the ex-Microsoft veteran who fathered DirectX technology and propelled Microsoft into the gaming business. In the interview, St. John explains how he started the DirectX project as an underground effort at Microsoft with a "couple of friends" and eventually managed to persuade game developers to adopt the technology, he also makes some choice comments about Windows Vista, too, including a tirade on how the new operating system handles games. Here's an excerpt:
I don't think Microsoft did anything to help the PC as a gaming platform with Vista, and that's a tremendous frustration because I take it very personally. If I would've been there, I would have made much more aggressive efforts to make sure Vista stayed out of the way of games. What you see with Microsoft is, without people at Microsoft who realize that the operating system does not add value to gaming, it gets in the way, they think they can add more value by adding in more [doo-doo] that only gets in the way of making a good game. Unfortunately, Vista does that. Microsoft added more [err, poo] that impedes game development. It's certainly possible to make great games in Vista, it's just more of a pain in the ass than it needs to be. I think Vista is a missed opportunity for Microsoft to have done a better job in supporting PC gaming.
He is also critical of Vista's security, comparing it to a concrete house that has screen doors. "It's an enormously overbuilt security system with huge, gaping holes."

His negativity and concerns towards Vista match that of what I've heard. WTF would you know anyhow? you just PLAY games, pfff. Being that I know people at MS "personally" and lots of developers from lots of companies, some of whom I WORKED WITH, partied with and I think his opinions and comments about MS and Vista are right on the money with a lot of crap I have heard about Vista and the strategies behind it.. Ya. The additions and things for Vista were not thought out are static and can't be changed. Security blows people just don't know it and then what new security there is likely some other bloated addition creates a hole somewhere else. The point of this guys article is Vista is no more a gamers platform than XP was/is and also, XP in its own rights is likely better. And like I said, DX10, is a crock of crap, DX is nothing more than a patch DX9c. MS didn't make Vista for gaming(I don't care what BS they market), they just added more bloat to make it LOOK like it was more designed for games. The product is being shoved down peoples throats as well and their sales do not reflect who is running it, it's based off many variables. So when I saw that, Vista outshun XP in sales, I just laugh.

When you actually have game credits to your name Genoism, then open your mouth. Until then, put a sock in it bitch! I've been on a yacht with some of MS boys.. How about you Genoism? Oh I'm sure with your mouth you seen lots of guys...(with their pants down) lmfao.

Again, great interview and a good one for anyone to read.

P.S. I believe I met Alex in Whistler BC with my friend in the movie business(who has close associates at MS) back in 1999, however I could be mistaken as lots of the MS boys were hefty.. lmao.

P.S.S. I also side with his shortcommings of his marriage/divorce. Sometimes if not most times, workplaces do not give a $hit about your life even though the HR and company policy say they do care.

Hey everyone, just wanted you to know that if we all could be as cool as xxxx then we could name drop, and treat everyone else like crap too! Of course, I can't back up any of his/her claims because I'm not a MS fanboy who gets off on thinking he/she is entitled to bash anyone regardless of his/her opinion. On the upside though, I bet you have a really cool geek job though. Do you tell Bill, Steve, or Peter that what you think of their 'crap' when you 'party' on the yacht with them? You sound just like one of the winners that works in the IT department at my job. Hey, maybe it is one of you!

Genoism(08:50 PM CEST - Mar,30 2007 )
pretty big mouth you have there x. I am actually a game developer, so regardless of who your friends are, when you actually get IN the business you can come back and tell me that.

xxxx(09:45 PM CEST - Mar,30 2007 )
Pretty small brain you have there Genoism, guess sheep cloning doesn't work huh?

xxxx(09:55 PM CEST - Mar,30 2007 )
ryno252, I do actually have a real geek job and I get paid for it very well. It affords me a big house a nice big SUV and lots of computer stuff. Where do you work? McDonalds? So lets see, cuz I know/met people you didn't you have a suck fit... Aww. Sucks to be as small as you huh?

Genoism.. I know ur just a kid and I know based on your previous posts you haven't got a clue about games. But nice try. You couldn't even understand my reply based on facts raised in Alex's interview.. Get a life bud.. or switch back to your xxxxx+ account, loser, oh wait, that's RETARD.

ryno252(12:41 AM CEST - Mar,31 2007 )
I think we can both agree that it's clear you are compensating for something alot smaller somewhere in your life or....on your body should we say? Life is good on my side of the computer, and to think I don't have to get on a forum and brag to everyone why I think my life is better than everyone else's and make homosexual remarks (which clearly proves that you have issues with it). You've made it very clear that what you lack in brains you make up for with a big ego. You have officially joined the 'I think I am cooler than everyone else club'. How does it feel being the only member? At least you get a cool jacket right?

ryno252- CHILL dont take it all seriously same with you xxxx, do i have to put you both in a corner?

as for vista and gaming, ill say one thing. dont bother vista is really bad right now with errors for gaming. Xp is faster for supreme commander the funny thing is supreme commander was ment to work well on vista but it dosnt i can barley play it and my comps specs are over the recommended.

xxxx(07:22 AM CEST - Mar,31 2007 )
feels great actually. lol. Vista sucks and when it actually matters there will be another replacement for it. Vista is like ME was to Windows 98.

El_Coyote(10:29 AM CEST - Mar,31 2007 )
im using vista and i have no problems with any games i tried. supreme commander feels the same as when i use it on XP

xxxx(06:46 PM CEST - Apr,02 2007 )
El_Coyote

That's great but if it's the same as on XP, then I don't see the point or worth of Vista..I thought however that SC was gonna get a DX10 upgrade for Vista..? It is funny the contrast of some who say it runs great yet others say Vista sucks, don't bother. I've heard more that it sucks than, it's worth it.

I do hope Microsoft wakes up from their dream world and knocks all their prices in half. I hate to hear people spending so much money on Vista..I'm surprised nobody has gone after them in light of their prices.
