HomeLAN has conducted an interview with CCP Games's Hrafnkell Oskarsson as he talks about their upcoming massively multiplayer space sim EVE: The Second Genesis. Here is a snip:
HomeLAN: How are you handling the aspect of Player vs. Player combat?
Hrafnkell Oskarsson: Player vs. player combat is one of the central themes of EVE, but we've still made sure that those that want to stay out of harms way can do so. The world is divided into security zones - in the most secure zones any aggression by one player versus another will be dealt with swiftly by computer-controlled police forces. Also, the security status of such transgressors is lowered, which prohibits them from entering high-level zones later on. In the low-level zones players must be ready to fend for themselves, but no one is ever forced to go there. As for combat itself, it is very tactical in nature. EVE is not a space-sim in the likeness of Freespace and such; during combat your considerations are for instance: maneuvering for positions (establishing range); launching missiles at the most opportune time; boosting your shield; activating jammers and other ecm (or eccm) modules, and so on. The central aspect is your power level - most things you do in combat cost power and it regenerates at a slow pace, so you must manage the power you have as best as you can - the last thing you want is to find yourself totally spent just when you had your enemy at the ropes or when you yourself are close to being blown up.
