GamePower has posted a new short preview of Etherlords, Nival Interactive's upcoming turn-based strategy game. In addition to their look at the game there is also an interview with the game's producer Serge Orlovsky.
GamePower: The game appears to be influenced by both Magic: The Gathering and Heroes Of Might & Magic. Is that true? If so, what about those games influenced your design decisions?
S.O.: On one hand, from the very start, we turned to Masters Of Magic & Master Of Orion as brilliant classics of the TBS genre. In terms of the combat system, our inspiration came from a number of trading card games. As for the visuals, in the strategic map design, we were influenced by Heroes Of Might & Magic, while the combat visual representation was supposed to bring on associations with certain console RPGs, such as the Final Fantasy series and Grandia. Later on, we re-designed the strategic gameplay in favor of a closer similarity to Heroes of Might & Magic, but it still includes traces of different design solutions. I believe that a good game can be compared to French cuisine, where the key to success lies not in uniqueness of ingredients but in a unique combination of things that taste good.
