TheSixthAxis has some quotes from Epic president Mike Capps published in Edge Magazine E215, now on newsstands (thanks BluesNews): Speaking to Edge this month, Epic president Mike Capps opens up about piracy, and why â€œthe moneyâ€™s on consoleâ€. In a frank and open interview on Unreal 4, Gears of War and Bulletstorm, Capps claims that â€œpiracyâ€™s already had its impactâ€.

â€œIf you walked into [Epic's Offices] six years ago,â€ said Capps, â€œEpic was a PC company. We did one PS2 launch title, and everything else was PC. And now, people are saying â€˜Why do you hate the PC? Youâ€™re a console-only company.â€™â€

â€œAnd guess what?â€ he says, â€œItâ€™s because the moneyâ€™s on console.â€

I'm sorry EPIC failure, but the reason for most piracy = shit games not worth owning. Like UT3 and crap Gear ports etc not designed for the PC or with any thoughtful design process with hardcore PC gamers in mind.

And the reason for high profit margins on console = well just look at the majority of the audience, you could make a buck selling them anything so long as it utilized the gfx hardware and passed a basic number of gameplay elements.

Well yes there is still that perceived problem(which like most pirates most likely wouldn't have bought the game either), but how dare consumers buy & sell pre-owned games that's just got to be stopped eh.

Of course there is still piracy on consoles, it's just a lot less than for PC. That makes it more attractive to them even though they still "lose sales to piracy" on console to some degree.

Most people who pirate are piss poor though so I don't buy the argument that killing piracy = equally proportional boost in sales. Maybe if it was really hard to pirate games on PC all the school and college kids with barely any income would save up over time and just buy one game that they really care about per year. I have noticed also that people who rip off lots of games spend about 5 minutes playing each one before moving on to the next one...

We can all see through smoke bellowing from Mikes anus, and his futile attempts to disguise curtailed finances, downsizing and other restructuring methods using piracy as a pretext for ceasing the development of PC titles.

Someone needs to remind Mike and Epic it was the PC which propelled him to fame. Yes it is cost effective to serve one master the lord of consoles. Whatever trick they use to lambaste the PC and inculpate piracy it will fail for the PC will prevail.

Smaller piracy rates on console are easy to explain: it's an already small and shrinking market - besides, noone really cares copying games because those aren't worth the price of the discs...

This guy is a director, so obviously he has no clue what he is talking about - same as most high-level managers. Or, maybe he's just high, smoking his last joints fast. He heard something somewhere, and he is trying to make himself look intelligent - but we all know that a good director does not speak in such a manner. I guess he does this in desparation before he's fired - due to the wrong decisions he's made. I am referring to the decision to go for the console. Why was this a wrong decision? Because he's put the company's money on it, (that's what he means by "Itâ€™s because the money's on console.") and console is a dying breed... Well, I guess there is no need to explain what this means.

Epic would do well to lay off this guy ASAP and hire someone who's up to speed - or it will be an epic fail soon...

I see a bunch of newbies in this thread who moan and complain but with absolute cluelessness. He's said nothing wrong. Csimbi, I don't know where you crawled out from but you should head back! I don't know if all of you are competing for moron of the year award, but if I were to say, you are all in a close tie.

PC is dead/dying and has been for a long time. Fucking accept it. It's literally pointless to go PC with anything, due to piracy and small numbers of player period. Most with a brain already moved to console because console is where all the big titles go. PC is not where the money is so why waste dev cycles on a platform anyone and everyone can get illegal copies? They tried protecting their ASSets and you all complained and whined because of it. Console is where it's at and it's been that way for a good many years. FFS even Duke Nukem would be going console before it went PC. If there would be another Prey it would be on console before it went on PC too, I know because they told me. It only makes absolute economical sense to design and prioritize for console as opposed to PC where games are more easily ripped and less sold.

I hold no grudges against Epic you make games in a market where you can make money not in a market where your games end up all over torrent sites and irc channels. So what if they started on PC. Be happy. At the time it made sense, it doesn't however make sense anymore. Don't expect any big blockbuster hits on PC anymore. This biggest blockbusters. Just not going to happen. MW2 was a blockbuster and it was consolized for PC. Go figure. How about those BC2 sales eh? You think PC owned in sales? No, it's dead last in terms of sales. Console outsells PC platform 10 to 1.

PC died a long time ago, it's just idiot's still left in the PC community that still don't get it.

Maybe you are in the stone-age people but on AVERAGE a console game vs a PC game is 4 to 1 in profit. Check any fucking chart you want. Console makes sense, PC doesn't.

The PC was great for a long time and then console came back and bit PC in the ass. Consoles are cheaper and the gfx are definitely much better than they ever were. Ever see Tiger Woods on PS3 or Xbox? It makes ALL the PC ones look and sound like complete and utter shit. Why because they knew if they put the money in console it would sell, so it was worth the effort to make the game 10x better. It only makes complete logical sense that a family would go and get a console before they got a PC. PC for gaming is nothing but a money hole. You can trade console games in and get, within two weeks, around 90% return.
Lets face it the average PC game is as long as that these days...
The PC game is a dead duck as soon as you've bought it; you can't trade it because of DRM,internet activation,STEAM etc and it's worthless to sell on.
Within a month or two it's bargain bin land! Check out Napoleon TW, it's already selling for a third of full price. What a loss.

Lack of user control
lack of 3rd party hardware
lack of aim
lack of proper dedicated servers for online play
lack a flexiblity to do anything other what is allowed by the company who makes the consoles(unless of course you go the illegal route and mod it)
increased price of games for a set resolution and settings that can never be changed
lack of mods
you see where this is going yet?

so tell me, other than the sheer amount of sheep that play on the consoles and the price of the console itself (not including all the accessories that must be purchased to equal the value that can come standard in most pc's, what more does the console provide, because the list is SOOO expansive.

When was the last time a game came out for the console that was able to constantly maintain a player count that didnt become stagnant or deprived of support or had servers shut down to force players to buy the new version of the game to play online that could last the test of time?

Alot of the PC community understands quality, and it shows in the piracy rate. If there is doubt that a game sucks people will pirate it, if they find out a game doesnt, they sell buy the masses. just look at bc2, it sold more than the ps3 and 360 versions combined just because they were desperate for something even slightly better than the shit P2P they were forced to use thanks to the porting of a CONSOLE GAME, and last i checked, the pc version looks and handles better faster load times etc. and is the SAME FUCKING GAME THE CONSOLES GOT. and the console version is still 10x better? hmm, i think you got your numbers mixed up.

So this is where i would end it, and this is where your waiting to comment on how much more expensive a PC is in comparison to consoles arent ya.

In order to create piece of great work it takes time and effort, include the myriad of PC configurations out there and you can see why EPIC prefer the "drag and drop" method when it comes to console. Time is money and EPIC has carried out the number crunching and the accountants in the gimp department have produced amazing financial reports that forecast a cornucopia of profit.

Mike is really saying we neither have the means, time or effort in developing PC titles so we'll sacrifice a newborn to the lord of CONSOLE ........ cha ching $_$!

just for the clueless people like tom who think pc gaming is dead, id just like to point out that wow alone generates 1,4 billion a year just in sucription revenues. its pretty safe to say with merchandise and micro transaction fees and box sales (wich mostly are sold online) that wow alone will create 2 billion revenue a year.
obviously wow is the biggest monthly fee mmo but still all pay to play and micro transactions mmos that exist today easily create 4 to 6 billion $ a year.

if you combine that with pc box sales and online distribution wich isnt accounted for in pc game sales you will be pretty close to the console market cash wise.

of course epic wouldnt know anything about that since the only games they do since fraeking forever, are arcade scifi shooters and dont dare call gears of war anything but arcade, since it is.

of course with consoles you get a whole bunch of people who either cant afford a pc, or didnt know who to use it (probably a lot more on the latter) so you have bunch of newbees, and i dont mean that as an insult but as a matter of fact, that havent played that arcade shooter 20 times over like the old vets of pc gaming have. so the games epic produces are a much better fit for consoles then for pc gaming right now.

and honestly, i really dont mind. i wouldnt even play them if i got them for free.

Yes I paid more for each of my two graphics cards than any of the current consoles, but I can play everything at 1920X1080 +4XAA with 60fps+. The good thing is that I could have that for 95% of the games with just one card, but what the hell. You want fucktard gameplay? Be my guest.

At least I get to have, Internet, Music, HD movies in any format, Emulators for 99% of the games out there, Email and what the fuck you can think of.

PCs are dying? So AMD and Nvidia will let the PC die and live alone on revenue from the console chips? Don't think so. AMD has already shipped 6.000.000 Evergreens. Evergreens go to PCs, not consoles.

Actually.. I have a lot of games that work at 1080p. My LCD is 60" of goodness. Have you ever seen Tiger Woods on console as compared to ANY version on PC? Probably not. TW dies on PC due to lack of sales/interest. Just like dozens and dozens of other "once" PC games.. TW for one, blows the shit out of PC and it ain't even close. 30fps, whatever man what a lame argument. All my games on my LCD run silk smooth. Some maybe initially when they came out were choppy but I do not have any choppy games (27 ps3 games and counting). One for example is Killzone 2.. I remember initially it was a wee bit laggy, but I since finished the game a few weeks ago after downloading a few patches and never experience 1 bit of lag. It was bugs, I have no other games that video lag at all. I know, I would notice, I know I would get a headache..

I have a 1 x GTX 260 896MB and I run ALL my games at 2048x1152 with 16AF and 4AA on 24" screen with >=2ns response time. What fucking retard goes and wastes money on SLI?! I'm sure the video card company is happy you did..What a total fucking waste of money. NO game needs it. Obviously you have little brains to think with but a big wallet to throw money away.

The movies and internet and music really made me laugh. You really are a clued out moron aren't you? I have FULL media streaming from my PC to my PS3. I can watch movies, listen to music and cruise the internet without a problem and as a matter of fact, up and until recently I could flip my console into a PC with mouse and keyboard and use Linux. I could manage my files and share them with others on my network, all from my CONSOLE! But Sony is a bunch of dumb fucks who removed that. As of right now, I have INSTANT access to +200 movies through my PS3 and they are ALL excellent quality because I dubbed them myself. Yes, I used my PC to do that!

First of all, what kind of retard plays Golf on a gaming device? Seriously man, go the fuck out to experience the real thing. It's not like driving around like crazy or shooting people. You couldn't do that for real.

Obviously there are some PS3 games that run at 1080P. This is not the rule though. This is the exception to the rule, contrary to the PC, which can run every fucking game it wants in 1080P or whatever resolution. There is a very basic brain function, that is called, HAVING A FUCKING CHOICE dimwit. The PC can even run freagin Wii games, at 1080P resolution through emulation for the love of God.

So, your PS3 is so awesome that you can actually download the latest H264 5.1 mkv file and watch it on it, WITHOUT using the PC in any way? No you can't. Can you run a P2P program, to find rare stuff, do you have Compiz Fusion in your semi baked Linux version? No you don't. Can you watch smooth 1080P videos on Youtube? No you can't. So STFU!

For just a little more money than a PS3, you can have a much much better PC and having far more options for everything. And yes you'd have much more 1080P gaming options as well.

As for the gaming smoothness, I see SONY and Microfuck have done a great job into herding you guys. Seriously now. Since when is 30fps smooth (again for 95% of the games). We've been having 60 frames per pixel screen scrolling since the Amiga and Atari ST. Who the fuck told you that 30fps is smooth?

They are throwing at you 720P, 30fps, motion blurred infested games, and you THINK that they are smooth, while playing them like a happy retard. All this blur serves as to hide the fucked up textures as well. As for SONY themselves, what kind of lies are they going to throw at you when the PS4 is going to come out? As for multi gpu, it really shows that you don't have no fucking idea about resolution, image quality and their relation to the framerate and the quality of the gaming experience.

You should watch my Crossfire Crysis videos and while watching them, you should keep thinking that you are not going to see this framerate, at these settings with that graphics quality, not even in PS5.

Anyway, there is no way that gamers like my self are going to pick up console and gamepadto play gears, ut or anything fps. It is just not "natural" and it's downright retarded to aim with a stick. I do play racing games with gamepad, a lot better than on keyboard.

anyway, if I ever pick up a console it will be something like a Wii, so I can have family and friends have some fun while having a snack or a beer or whatever.

I can't see fun in playing NFS shift on PS3 without some lan/split screen option...

Piracy is not killing PC games, developers/publishers greed is. Video game industry is far past the time when only some people out there could code games. But somehow every developer thinks he should earn three ferraris and million dolar house per year. Bu-hu. Not gonna happen, and it's not due to pircy, it's due to COMPETITION and market laws.
