Epic-Midway Deal, Interview - interview

- Post a comment Midway has sent out
a press release, announcing that the company has acquired the publishing
rights to three Unreal franchise games. Unreal Championship 2 (the Xbox game)
will now be published by the company, as will two future Unreal Tournament games
on PC and consoles. Shortly after the PR went out,
HomeLAN
has conducted an interview with Mark Rein of Epic Games as he talks about
their deal with Midway:
HomeLAN - Midway is not known for its PC game releases. Why did Epic wish to make a publishing deal with a company known for its console games?
Mark Rein - Midway is hungry to get into the PC business in a big way and signing up to publish future Unreal Tournament titles demonstrates that. They've already got a very talented marketing organization so we're confident they can perform as well as any other publisher on the PC side. In addition Steve Allison, their Chief Marketing Officer, played a very key role in the success of Unreal Tournament in the past and I think he'll play an even bigger role in the success of Unreal Tournament in the future. But this isn't only about PC. We're definitely also going to draw on their strength and expertise where consoles are concerned. We're not ready to make any specific announcements but we're planning to bring these future Unreal Tournament titles to next generation console systems as well.
HomeLAN - Will John Romero and Tom Hall, who were recently hired by Midway, be working with Epic on these titles?
Mark Rein - Unfortunately not. I know they're both doing some work on the new Area 51 game right now and it looked really good when Midway showed it to us recently. We've been lucky to work with publishers with great gamers on board who love the products we make and are happy to give us their feedback on our products. John Romero and Tom Hall are two great guys that myself, and several other people at Epic, have worked with before and really respect. So we're hoping they'll find the time to play our games early on in development and provide us with their valuable input. People I talk to at Midway say these guys are totally kicking ass there which is no surprise to us.
