- Post a comment CVG has posted an interview with Christopher Longpre of Westwood Studios, talking with him about Emperor: Battle for Dune, their first 3D strategy game.
CVG: Your last RTS, Dune 2000, was essentially a very similar game to Dune 2, and didn't really advance the genre any. What was the reason for this?
Christopher Longpre: "Dune 2000 was essentially a remake of Dune 2. We intentionally used the same units and missions, but added multiplayer support and full-screen cinematics to try and bring it up to date. Emperor is the true sequel to Dune 2, benefiting from all of Westwood’s RTS experience from games like Command and Conquer, Red Alert and Tiberian Sun."
CVG: Emperor is the first 3D Westwood RTS. Is this the most significant evolution from its forebears?
Christopher Longpre: "People were disappointed that Tiberian Sun wasn't a 3D game, but we were waiting until 3D card technology had advanced and was widespread enough to make it worth our while. We didn't want to alienate anybody. Even if we'd wanted to go 3D two years ago, graphics card technology wasn't up the levels of performance we needed. We were never going to do a 3D game for the sake of it, and took the extra time to see how a 3D environment could be used to provide a different gameplay experience." [more] |
