Electronic Arts Gets Lord of the Rings - briefly

The World’s largest games publisher, Electronic Arts, is reportedly on the verge of announcing it has acquired the rights to the film incarnations of J.R.R.Tolkien’s epic The Lord of the Rings saga. Speculation regarding this deal has been mounting for a while, but it now appears the Californian publishing giant is to officially confirm the fact in the next few days.
This is massive news for EA, as The Lord of the Rings looks certain to be one of the most lucrative movie franchises in the World, alongside the likes of The Matrix and Harry Potter, the licenses to which EA has also secured. New Line Cinema will bring The Lord of the Rings to theatres in three instalments, one per year beginning this December with The Fellowship of the Ring.
Any tie-in games EA releases will go head to head with The Lord of the Rings titles already planned by Sierra studios, who announced the acquisition of the rights to Tolkien’s novels in May. Since the content of the movies diverges from and reinterprets the content of the novels, a new set of rights was established for the films, hence two separate publishers set to release games. Sierra plans to launch its first title based on the license in January 2002. [more]
