Tolstiy has conducted an intervievw with Olivier Masclef of the Dune team at WideScreen Games in France.
Tolstiy: This question is obvious but I can't miss asking it (haven't seen your answer on it anywhere): why are you creating on the Dune universe not any other universe or something? What is the main reason you began the work on this project with real excitement?
Olivier Masclef: Well, we all know the Dune universe in here, and some of us (Dominique our Art Director and Sylvain our Game designer especially) are real fans of it (they have read all the books many times!). We consider this universe as one of the best science fiction universes ever created. For us, it is some kind of a holly grail to work on such a famous and great universe.
Tolstiy: How did it happen that it was you who got this universe in your hands - I may suppose that it is not that easy nor cheap to obtain a license for creating a game based on the works of a famous author?
Olivier Masclef: Well, our publisher, Cryo, has signed the license (I cannot disclose how much the license did cost, but I can just tell that it is not cheap !), and they proposed that we could do this action adventure game based on Dune for them. It was a great surprise and we were very happy to do it of course, and the fact is that they gave us total freedom to design it.
Tolstiy: When one is creating a game based on the book the developer has two types of behavior: you can build the game holding tightly to the original universe or you can add some additional features (like Ordos in Westwood's games). What can you tell us about your approach to the development of the game based on already existing universe
Olivier Masclef: Our approach is to hold tightly to the original universe. We don't want to disappoint the fans (as we are fans ourselves!). The fact is that we can exploit a part of Frank Herbert's story that is not very well described and it is the period of the two years when Paul, after the crash in the desert, is recognized as the messiah by the Fremen, and will make some guerilla operations against the Harkonnens and the spice smugglers, and will build an army of Fremen to gain the control over Arrakis.
