Developing Rage for Consoles Was a Huge Mistake - interview
(hx) 02:17 AM CEST - Oct,09 2011 - Post a comment / read (11)
id Software founder and programming legend John Carmack has just given a bold statement that may not pleased consoles gamers. He said, "one of the larger mistakes" he made with RAGE was allowing consoles to have an equal place in development alongside the PC.
In an interview to PC Gamer, John Carmack said, "When we started on the game six years ago, I looked at the consoles and said ‘These are as good as the PCs that we're on here’, and our development strategy was set up such that we basically developed live on all the platforms there. And now when we’re looking at PCs that have ten times the horsepower of the consoles... I’m making a large change in my direction, just saying ‘We should be focusing on building things efficiently on the PC and [then] deploying on to consoles.’ And we didn’t make that as crisp of a distinction as we should have."

Carmack further explain how that will change going forward, "My development system now has twenty-four threads and twenty-four gigs of memory, and we can start putting on half a terabyte of solid state drives, and these are the things that are gonna drive the development process on the PC. So, I’m actually as excited about how we’re developing tht titles in this coming generation as the graphics enhancements and things that I’m gonna make."

Like console gamers give a shit, no their standards are met just fine with what is released on corporate platform scrapbox.

Carmack just knows that his biggest fans are a little say..disappointed? He is just indulging the PC uberware crowd some to keep them sweet for the next hyped title. As if ID Software knows how to make an awesome PC game anymore. They lost it over a decade ago, now they just ballz it up.

Seriously I'm sure next degeneration screw u consumer console will also have an.... "equal place in development alongside the PC" ...version of whatever the next title is.

Yes, the expectations of the console dudes are different.

Consoles will not live up to the PCs. Ever.
Why? Because they need to be cheaper than an equivalent PC.
How do you achieve that? You cut hardware features, or, you use very cheap components made in sweatshops, like Apple.

tride(10:54 AM CEST - Oct,09 2011 )
Oh cmon, what are you complaining about ? RAGE is awesome game! Its has problems but i dont find any bugs yet...
Theyll patch it and it will be awesome again!

And about ID and Carmak, lol! Everyone makes mistakes! They can make too!
If you are late in development, there is no turning back! Either you finish it or leave it! RAGE is awesome game so far...

Finally some remorse and some appreciating of one of the industry leaders.

Here's hope that fucktard Sweeny follows suit. Fucking sell outs.

In any case, I was surprised that the game only required 40% gpu usage, of one of my 570s, to run at 60fps rock solid at 1920X1080P+4XAA and 8192k textures.

That DOES show some very decent programming having been made, but still they should have paid much more attention to ATI users. You don't build an engine basing it in CUDA for DXT decompression. Jesus fucking Christ.

Anyway, patch 1 has come out so let's see how this works.

Yes it's the 'try and make game sales' speech when sales are shit. It's 10 quid cheaper on ALL platforms here. You can buy cars with 10 times the HP of the average car but it COSTS money!!! The idea that consoles sell 10x the games, is because gamers want to spend money on GAMES. Not hype on HW that DOESN'T improve a shit or average game. 28gig of RAM 12 core CPU's, soooooooooo what...... Graphics have NEVER,EVER improved a piss-poor game. But the average PC has to feel good about his outlay. Game...? There's a game?? I thought it was made for JUST me.

Tom(06:14 PM CEST - Oct,09 2011 )
@tride, the game is average and to be brutally honest, it's Doom in another skin with nothing really new other than driving dune buggies. It's funny when I bought it because I refused to spend $60 on it and when I looked at the box in the store the guy says to me they are giving a $20 store gift card with the game.

The sky is the same all the time
You drive here and there for about 30 seconds
There is a guy in town that has been looking at the same pipe for hours and hours and still says the same thing
It's linear as shit, you can't just go where you want
There is invisible walls that block you.
Bosses are easy as shit, you just circle strafe them for 30-60 seconds. Woo

The best thing in the game that I can say is quality is the voice work

Okey. Who told you to expect something else ?
And please, tell me a game that you can go anywhere and do anything you want ? (Exclude Fallout) Anything else ? lol...
And second, this is definitely not a DOOM game in another skin, lol! RAGE has a lot of RPG elements, that make it nicer.
The unique thing about it is the environment, all that work creating this unique world without tiling textures is freaking amazing, setting awesome atmosphere!
I like it! And i cant recall you writing a positive comment on any game!

Am I the only one who'd love DOOM in Rage's skin? (That'll be DOOM 4, right?)

I'll wait for a big sale before buying RAGE.

psolord> Jesus fucking Christ.

Don't blame Christ.

Despite claims to the contrary, Carmack's not a god.

Come on man. That was an expression.

And yes I'd love an ID Tech 5 Doom 4 game or a Quake 5 or something. Just with no gpu affiliation whatsoever though.

This gets on my nerves whenever it happens. It should not be allowed on the PC.
