posted an interview
with Digitalo's Vic DeLeon, the senior producer of Devastation, the
upcoming Unreal engine powered first person shooter. Here is a taster:
HomeLAN - Why should everyone reading this be excited about Devastation? Can you give us any details now?
Vic DeLeon - Well, first you should be excited about this Q and A because it's one of the first where I am allowed to talk about specifics from the game. We've been quiet for so long, I'm excited myself! At the risk of sounding like every other shooter's response to this question...Devastation is not just another shooter. Playing both Devastation's single player adventure and the online multiplayer are experiences that players will find as unique as they are fun to play. The Devastation experience is immersive, addicting as hell, and it's got style - yes, lots of style. Each and every person who plays it will remember something different and special...a moment where they were actually there, in the game world, kicking ass.
On one hand, Devastation offers players an opportunity to really feel like they are part of a kickass team, and more importantly, part of a larger, scarier world that has been torn apart at the seams. Naturally, I'm not going to reveal all the unique features and plot twists we have in store for the players just yet, but I can tell you we are striving to set this game apart from some of the others coming out in the near future. We are aware of the competition, and are balancing everything thoughtfully and elegantly, crafting the game to stand out from the crowd.
The single player game is just freaking amazing. It plunges players into the world with a degree of exploration and interaction, mixed with instant doses of action and frenzied close-quarters combat action. All this happens in a tutorial-esque kind of atmosphere; however there's no drill sergeant or hologram talking to you, and there's no obstacle course or pipes to crawl through. It's a "get your hands dirty and learn as-you-go" situation for the first few levels. You start the game off with a gun in your hand, and a bounty on your head the very first instant - we like that you don't have to wait around to kick some ass.
The cool part is that the entire game dynamic shifts through several phases as you learn to fight alone, then while protecting a bot sidekick, then fighting alongside another sidekick, then two, then with an entire team of them! The first few levels start off in a traditional point A to B manner, traversing entire geographic areas with plenty of exploring potential if you look for it. As the game progresses, the experience becomes less and less linear as the entire game dynamic begins to shift yet again. You and your teammates acquire certain weapons and technologies that help you fight better, and in some cases, transform the entire game by making players more difficult to kill, sometimes even immortal in a manner of speaking, and that's all I'm going to say about this for now.
