Crysis to Run on Older PCs - briefly
(hx) 10:22 AM CET - Feb,07 2007 - Post a comment / read (11)
Next-Gen.biz has a new article covering Cevat Yerli's speech at IMAGINA 07. Cevat explains the pros and cons of developing a game for Windows Vista, DX10 and Multi-core processors. He also makes it clear that the game is being made to be very scalable so older hardware (over 2 years old) will still be able to play it:
Although Yerli is confident that Crysis will run on older setups, he suggests that if you can only play the game on DX9, try not to view the game running in the superior DX10. "We work hard to give everyone a great experience," he states. "You should not miss anything when [only] playing it on DX9, but if you get a chance to play it on DX10 you might [miss the fidelity when going back to DX9].

He adds that close ties with software and hardware partners have helped Crytek overcome the complicated transition to Vista, DX10 and multi-core processors. Yerli says, "Working with early DX10 hardware was challenging, but our strong connections with Nvidia, Intel and Microsoft have helped a lot. We rarely had crashes, blue screens or rebooting machines."

I fail to see the logic in buying a game you must strip to crap just to play it. I refuse to play this game given I have a 7600. Whether they made it to go back 2 years or not, the result is the same, Turn everything off. Would you go watch a movie if half the narration was missing and the screen was black and white and not colour? Would you pay full price to see that film? Not likely.

Sabot(05:45 PM CET - Feb,07 2007 )
But that's how *we* see games xxxx.
Why do you think 'The Sims' is a massive seller? Because it runs on just about any machine out there =mass market.
Although there are titles out there marketed the same way as Crysis -and have done so for years.
Operation Flashpoint sold 1.5million copies *because* it could 'grow' with your upgrades, whilst still being an exceptional game to play through many options in the settings menu. Textures could be 64x64 right up to 4096x4096 and mere 100s of metres to thousands -what i play now, but it took me 4years to get to those textures and draw distances!!
The Crysis dev's are actualy catering for DX10 and DX9 users and incredibly older machines!! That is amazing in this day and age where -if Microsoft had it's way- you would need to go out and buy a whole new machine just for it's OS!
Gameplay is more important than graphics -and has always been the case.
Christ, i sat playing VGA games (Pixels the size of dinner plates) and had more fun that the latest, greatest DX9 graphic offerings today!
Make a game run only on DX10 hardware or 512mb DX9 cards etc,etc is old hat. Dev's have to be flexible.
So you would rather go out and buy a DX10 graphics card and hardware because the game demanded it? Isn't that cutting your nose off to spite your face :p

Hey i love watching older B&W films! I have the complete boxed collection of Laurel & Hardy 8)

djRom(06:11 PM CET - Feb,07 2007 )
Although I do agree with you XXXX...I am kinda shocked that you would say that, seeing as how you have said on many occassions that you are mad about upgrading every 6 months and such. Stumpus hit the nail on the head with his post, and actually makes me want to go break out my copy of Operation Flashpoint in the next few days to give it a go with my friends, again, now that all of the systems in my room are more than enough powerful to run it. :)

xxxx(06:28 PM CET - Feb,07 2007 )
Sorry but what you guys do not seem to understand, I have and continue to refuse to buy a game, $60 that I cannot run as designed and recommended or damn close enough, such as disabled Shadows and AA. So do lots of others. Have they shown you screenshots of what the game looks like with all settings literally turned off? No.. There's a reason, cuz it would look 10x worse and not up to par. It ruins the intended experience. Gfx may be a side thing I agree and gameplay sure, it's definitely most important. But if I am gonna play a game like Crysis I'd personally want to see it with decent settings not crap or shitloads of missing things. Your comments Stumpus merely highlight what 'you' will tolerate and perhaps djRom. We'll see if their global sales reflect what they hoped. I still believe Crysis = Farcry in terms of sales and popularity. Everyone says oh FC is the best its the best blah blah, until you get on to find a server and it lags, sound sucks or there is literally no one playing.. Yeah FC is the best.. best over-inflated game of all time. The singleplayer was nothing special to me either.

Ur very last comment Stumpus obviously went over your head. I meant, would you pay the same to go to a movie and watch Rush Hour 3 or Star Wars in black and white and only sound coming from one speaker? I agree Laurel and Hardy in B&W great, but that was how it was INTENDED to be.

I already know Crysis will look and play like $hit on a 7600 but they don't want to tell you that, they just want to tell you yeah it will run on old PC's... I am not interested. WHEN I can play it, I will buy it. And if SP is bad, MP will be even worse for those with inadequate machines.

Sabot(07:59 PM CET - Feb,07 2007 )
I know what you're talking about xxxx re; B&W films, that's why i stuck out the tongue.
Put it this way, that's what makes the PC what it is today; the ability for a dev to put in content that grows with your machine.
Take the XBox for eg, every game looks the like it's made by the same dev! (same gameplay (A-B) ,graphics that are nothing to shout about etc) Because it has limits. Graphics and it's hardware are maxed out always It's always pushing it's envelope and of course it's not upgradeable.
In Halo2 you loaded levels with complete missing textures! It would load and draw right before your eyes! (that's an example)
Ah Draw distances, now they are a joke on any console compaired to a PC.
When i play games on a PC and it has sheds loads of options i'm in heaven! Regardless if i can play them or not at full settings, it's there to tease me and to look forward to. Why else do we own/build PCs if not to upgrade them??
Console games don't and will never do that to you...is what i'm saying
The PC is your flexible friend! Lol

3/4 of the time I do not go back to games that I've already played. Minor exception. RTS mostly.

Come on, you know that bs. PS2, the games have gotten better, the new releases and I do not believe Xbox360 is maxxed out yet. If like Sony, they will get pushed further.

Stumpus>

I say that's a bug not a limitation or an example of a limitation. I say bad code. I also don't buy draw distance. I didn't see any limitations I haven't seen on a PC. As a matter of fact on Xbox 360, I don't buy the draw distance stuff at all. I seen enough games and I play a shitload on my PC to know this is more you degrading it's capabilities because it's a console and it fits ur arguement.

I agree somewhat however it most times does not lure 'me' back. FC was the perfect example, even at high settings with a better card, I was not more impressed and the game was still the same crappy game. PC has lots of options as you say to enable more people to play. Buying a PC should not require you to be in the 6month upgrade game, especially at the prices nVidia and ATI are allowed to get away with when you consider HOW LONG they've been around. I'm sorry but I find it criminal, know enough about electronics, cpu's circuits etc to know nVidia and ATI are simply gouging and using the 6 month upgrade game to make their profit margins. Do you really truly believe a 8800 should go for $600? Come on... it's old tech branded as new, or it's existing tech that's been sitting around purposely to make their next product better.

Stumpus>

PC is a money hole pure and simple and the games do not substantiate the costs in terms of returns. Now if a 8800 was $300 then it's a different story. But it isn't. When a video card literally out-costs a total PC, hd and sound card included, I see a big fucking problem with that.

Anyhow, we can bash heads on this forever however I've been buying and upgrading for well over 20 years now, longer than most of you if not ALL of you. I'm done playing along with nVidia and ATI's pricing games. I do not feel the return, albeit I got more options for quality, do not outweigh the logic and entertainment a console returns. There are too many games that come out to make me go back to 'a' game I bought a year ago or more and find I will enjoy it. That's the premise of my whole opinion. If it can't be engineered to properly work on current and future pc's without having to turn everything off, then it's not worth my time. Look at HL1 and HL2 as to very well engineered and thought out games that even with the hearty upgrades, still runs silk smooth on old and new hardware. I think Crytek pisses me off cuz I know a lot of what they say is lies and twisting of truth. I can't directly point out names and people cuz I'd get sued one way or another but I know they are a bunch of f'ing lying trash. They twist certain facts sort of within the laws to deceive people and I don't believe in that.

xxxx i'm an old gamer, 43years old. So we don't need to go down the route of, "longer than most of you if not ALL of you".
I've been gaming since 1976. Can we say 'original Pong' Lol
But hey we're all different and we all have opinions -that's humans. As long as your happy with what your choice of games platform that's the main thing.
I just love the PC -yes it's a cash-cow to most folks- but so is a pub and smoking cigarettes! Neither of which i do. So i only upgrade my 'cash-cow' maybe once a year and that's hardly a bank balance buster. Considering smoking 20 a day in the uk costs a person nearly £2,000 per year!!!
God knows what folks spend in pubs daily/weekly plus the cost of smoking! You could be buying a whole new machine every 6 months easily.
People are bleeding money hand-over-fist, but fail to see it because it's a habit. The PC -in relative terms- costs not very much when you take into account what you spend on car ownership, daily fuel and other luxuries that we take for granted.

djRom(06:28 AM CET - Feb,08 2007 )
Wow...Umm...Yeah, I'm 20. I've been gaming since umm I guess 89. And I totally agree with the statement, thats how I justify my dj equipment splurges (though I am addicted to black crack...vinyl records..haha).

Good on you!
I'm still trying to buy all that i own on vinyl, to CD. Been doing that since the late 80's. By the time i buy it all, some other damn format will be invented! Lol

Do your laws stipulate you must buy it if you already own it on vinyl? Eek

Vinyl has it's quality, but with a card like the Live or Xfi you can easily enhance your music to sound like it was vinyl. I download the mp3's myself and have my whole vinyl collection in mp3 (approx 150 vinyl records). Audio cd's? audio cd's are a thing of the past already, now it's MP3 cd's. I can't even remember the last time I bought a Audio CD.

I'd just imagine for a guy of your stature of knowledge of PC's Stumpus, that this would be a no brainer. My father in law is 71 and even he converted all his vinyl and tapes to MP3. And I personally don't even think it's about the medium changing, it's the format it's in.

It's posts like this the from you where I really scratch my head and wonder when you bicker at something I posted my opinion on something that is way more technical than transferring music.

Note, I listen to <= 80's bands only.

Sabot(03:34 PM CET - Feb,09 2007 )
xxxx i'm just 'set in my ways', i just want the CD versions to have and to hold and play on my Pioneer Hi-Fi. That way i can rip the whole album into MP3 for my portable player. I'm not interested in individual tracks like some of you guys may be, so downloading a whole album (of what i own) in MP3 format costs me more than buying a CD.

Besides we don't have the room for a record deck (to play vinyl) nor the time to spend converting it digitaly (yes i own an old Sony deck but it's under about 16years worth of stuff!!)

That's the way i am -same goes for downloading games; I wont do it as long as i can physicaly buy a hard copy.
As i said, your different and i'm different but it needn't need a dissection of each others quotes should it?
It's not that i'm one of those 'stuck in the past' folk. Far from it! Our house is a technoheads dream and i love nothing more than hands-on stuff and doing what the average 'joe' doesn't. That's what makes us different, not following the rat race.
For eg i'm right into nitro trucks along with my mate -i got him into it from a hobby i've had since approx 1982 and also mountain biking for leisure. But my workmates just pub, smoke and go watch/scream & shout at football matches.
Like that's fun when your a teenager and still arsing around! But when your in your 40's?!?! These guys are going to be dead before they are mid 60 years old!
I enjoy hill walking also (approx 2,800ft hills) That's one place you wont find the average 'joe' Lol.
He'll never get to look over some of your own countries most spectacular views and smells of the cleanest air that you can get -short of hanging your head out a plane at ##,000ft ;) Good de-stresser for everyday life too.
DO something different that you enjoy, not what the 'rat race' masses do
