- Valve sent out
a press release that "Pre-loading of the
Counter-Strike: Source Beta to owners of Counter-Strike: Condition Zero and
the ATIHL2 bundle just started. The CS: Source BETA contains one map (de_dust)
and a single player model for each team. It is the first open test of the Source
engine that powers Half-Life 2. On Wednesday, this second phase of the beta will
open and the beta will be playable to this group.
- Doug Lombardi of Valve recently sent
HL2World.com
an email further extrapolating on what is needed to run a dedicated Source
Engine game server: "It should be close to a Goldsrc/Half-Life 1 game, if not
better. For a 32 player server that is full, you'll need a fairly beefy machine
with at least a 1Mb upload net connection."
- In related news,
HL2World is reporting that
Valve accidentally released (when it initially distributed the Counter-Strike:
Source beta to cyber cafes last week) a file containing the full text of Half-Life 2's story line revealing the
full plot of Half-Life 2. The text file seems to be used for closed captioning of the game. There is no official word as to why the file was included with this game. However,
some reports say the dialogue-laden .gcf has been identified and will not be
included with the CS: Source beta data offered to CS: Condition Zero owners.
