Guys at
CS-Nation has posted an interview
with Gearbox Software's studio head Randy Pitchford, as they talk about Counter-Strike:
Condition Zero, their stand-alone Half-Life engined single player FPS. Here is a taster:
CS-Nation: Many recent single-player first person shooters that have been released have been largely hyped and had good sales, but failed to remain popular. What does Condition-Zero have that will allow it to remain a popular game for an extended period of time, much as Counter-Strike has been able to do?
Randy Pitchford: Typical narrative based single player games are expendable. Once you've gone through the narrative, that's it. But in Condition Zero, the action is more of a systems based game. The design draws influence from our favorite console and RTS games. That's not to say that the game has no narrative. The truth is that the missions in Condition Zero are presented contextually and that there is a story that progresses from one episode to the next, but the specific objectives and incentives to keep playing are very strong and go far beyond the scope of the campaign story.
