Confirmed: Watch_Dogs Will Run With 4GB RAM - tech
(hx) 09:07 AM CEST - May,22 2014 - Post a comment / read (13)
According to the official PC Requirements list, Watch_Dogs needs at least 6GB of RAM. Well, today I can reveal that there won't be any hard lock mechanism preventing users from playing this game, even if they only have 4GB of RAM. In short, PC gamers with less than 6GB of RAM will be able to launch the game. There might be some swap issues when the game loads more data, but there won’t be any lock similar to the one found in the unpatched version of Call of Duty: Ghosts. Watch_Dogs releases on May 27th!
Arkaprava Biswas: I am only asking that will it RUN smoothly on high settings with 4 gb RAM and a gtx 780.. :'(

Jonathan Morin (Creative Director of Watch_Dogs): 4GB is lower then min specs. It might run if nothing else is running, but when it swap to your hard drive it will lag.

I'm sure it will. They'd lose a whole lot of customers if it did not.

Ghosts, BF4, Thief and Wolfenstein can run like little mofos, if you only have 4GBs of RAM.

Even more so if you use things like AV, Anti Malware, Download Managers, etc and you don't close them.

Thankfully these are the only four that I have come across. Do you guys know of any more?

Holy crap what's the matter? We PC gamers have been wanting games to take advantage of more memory for years, now they finally do and you're complaining!? You can get 8G for $100..

Csimbi(09:41 PM CEST - May,22 2014 )
That's not the point.
If there is more memory, take advantage of it, by all means.
But it should still run if there is not...

BTW, I hear Wolfenstein is 64bit only yet the memory footprint is less than 2Gs. Go figure.

I don't go shopping for games to "take advantage of more memory," I go shopping for good games. When I build a PC, I install the amount of memory I expect will future-proof it for the anticipated lifespan of the system, not because I'm looking for a game to eat up all the memory.

Besides, Watchdogs is just the latest in a long line of over-hyped console trash. I've seen this pattern repeated dozens of times. It's a mediocre game which will be utterly forgotten by this time next year. The only ripple it'll make in the pond is for the hype and viral advertising, and that will disappear sooner than the game itself.

Short version: Meh game is meh, no matter its memory footprint or hype meter reading.

That. And emulating a console on the PC requires a lot of RAM. Ever tried emulating PC on console?

What the fuck gamer puts only 4GB of ram in their gaming box. Future proof my ass. 4GB period is bare minimum.

I didn't say that MY current machine had 4GB in it, Tom. That would be a couple builds and eight years ago. The current gaming machine has 16GB. But I don't care if Watchpuppies will run on it or not, since I've no slightest intention of playing the silly thing.

*edited MB to GB. /facepalm That's what happens when you've been building boxes for 30 years...

Csimbi(04:07 PM CEST - May,23 2014 )
I've had 16Gs for years now, but then again, I work and I have income.
Gamers typically don't...

Wow, where do you pull that BS from man?! Not only that but RAM is and has been dirt cheap.

Ya I guess.. Ya no interest here for that game.

16GB is overkill and does nothing but I guess with cheap prices, what the hell. I tried the 16GB for close to a year, made absolutely no difference to anything and that's including modelling. Maybe CAD work would benefit but I highly doubt it. 8GB is more than plenty for any gaming. 4GB to me will just get you by.

doodah(08:56 PM CEST - May,23 2014 )
You'll need more than 8G as time goes on - both the XBO and PS4 have 8G so games will start to take advantage of that as developers figure out the wonders of 64bit..

Tom(09:05 PM CEST - May,23 2014 )
By that time I will need a new machine and I don't think that will happen for at least another 2-3 years. Today anymore than 8GB, depending on what you do other than play games is pointless. Many a review out there showing you there is next to no difference between 8 and 16GB. Originally I had 16GB about a year or so ago, it made no difference for anything, windows, mapping, compiling. I just put the ram in my HTPC.

Aren't you one of those Steam fanbois? I thought you'd know that they collect statistics... My bad, sorry.
Here you go. Scroll down a bit and open "System RAM". You'll see that most games have 4G or less today (well, in April).
I do agree on your notion about Steam though: it's BS.

Tom> Originally I had 16GB about a year or so ago, it made no difference for anything, windows, mapping, compiling. I just put the ram in my HTPC.
I agree on that, too - and that's why I'm saying that if there's enough RAM, software should user it (if it can, obviously).
People kept buying PCs because there was a need for upgrading (and that's why I bought my 16Gs years ago), too.
Nowadays even MS can't screw up WinDOS so bad that it would not run on a mediocre PC well enough... So, no need to upgrade -> PC market is slowing down (won't stop though) -> game makers are bound by hardware limits (else people would not buy games).

It's all about demand and supply, as usual. I bet if there were a porn game requiring 32core 10Ghz processors with 256GB RAM, everyone would have that sort of PCs in 5-10 years.

The good news is that WinDOS uses the extra RAM for write caching at least - meaning that your RAM is not sitting there completely idle - so until the RAM fills up, you can write onto regular HDDs with SSD speeds. After that, it's slow as hell - but we don't write >4Gs in one go very often, so it's quite all right...
