Tolstiy's Place. has been updated with a brand new interview. This time I speak with a famous designer - Cliff Bleszinski of Epic Games. We touch upon various subjects, though don't expect to find info on Epic's current project - Unreal Warfare - they are hiding something that's for sure. Basically, the interview is about designers and level designers and their contribution to the whole project. Here is a slice:
Tolstiy: Cliff, you're a lead designer at Epic. Could you, please, tell us about you work - I was always curious about people whose title has "lead" in it. Can you shed some light on what is it to be lead designer: what are your duties, what is the chain of the command, what's your role in it etc? Are there any people, which you control directly and you can tell them what and when something must be done?
Cliff Bleszinski: I believe that if you have to order people around then you're using the wrong kind of motivation. Creative people should feel an internal pressure and drive to succeed and make great content. External pressure should not be the primary motivator. That said, anyone in a position like this cannot afford to sit back and let things go wild - there's a delicate balance to be had. I'm still learning how to do my job every day!
In addition to the previous designer answer (see above) I also maintain our design page. However, the majority of cool design decisions wind up occurring in impromptu office discussions that seem to randomly occur between any number of Epic developers rather than on some stiff HTML document. I'm a big believer in a Liquid Design - design by feel, not by math. [more]
