The Epic Games Store is currently suffering from what people in the industry call "an image problem." Despite challenging the Steam monopoly with a more generous revenue split for publishers and developers, the Epic Games Store has a vocal contingent of critics. They allege that the Epic Games Store is poorly designed and lacking in features, fair criticisms, actually. But perhaps most stunningly some have gone as far to say that the Epic Games Store is literal spyware. Not in a cheeky way either, but that Epic is a conduit for the Chinese government to spy on players. Here's a string of Tim Sweeney tweets on the topic: I support everyone’s right to complain about tech industry stuff. Epic’s store, with exclusive games and a spartan feature set, is a fine target for ire. But please help separate facts and opinions from the lies about spyware and foreign control.

I’m the controlling shareholder in Epic Games, and have been since 1991. We have a number of outside investors now. Tencent is the largest. All of Epic’s investors our friends and partners. None can dictate decisions to Epic. None have access to Epic customer data.

Tencent is a Chinese company founded in 1998. CEO Pony Ma and the other co-founders played a lot of Unreal Tournament back then, and visited Epic in the early 2000’s. In 2012 Epic was looking to move to online games, and we invited Tencent in as an investor to help us.

I’ve never regretted it, and the recent anti-China rage doesn’t change that even slightly, as its completely unfounded. Epic has only had positive interactions with Tencent at all levels.

All of Epic’s big decisions are made here in the USA and as CEO I’m 100% responsible for them. I’m grateful for everyone who has spoken in support. I also read and respectfully consider all dissenting arguments of fact and principle. Just please keep it real.

I bought on Epic game store.. almost a week from the day I bought, I been regularly receiving phone calls from people talking in Chinese. My phone number @ home is private and the only time I give it is when I buy something/create an account somewhere/credit card. Super rare I get an unwarranted call. A wrong number maybe..

My guess is Epic sold my info. Wayyyy to coincidental. I've so far blocked 6 phone numbers all of which are people talking in Chinese. I since removed any credible/personal information on my Epic account and keeping an eye on my credit card too.

Think about it when you go buy on Epic. I wont be making any other purchases on Epic store. So I guess I'll be waiting even longer for this game.
Just for you info, one of the largest video game companies in the world, Tencent owns 40% of Epic Games — a fact cited by English speaking netizens as reason for concern. Nevermind that Tencent also owns sizable chunks of other game companies including Ubisoft, Activision-Blizzard, Riot Games, Paradox, and more, many of which also offer their own video game launchers with exclusives.

Tencent, like almost all of China's biggest companies, has a close relationship with the Communist government of China. This relationship has been used by various agencies to accuse Chinese enterprises of being tools of the Chinese government for espionage. It's hardly new in the tech space as Chinese companies like Huawei are regularly cited as selling unsafe hardware which the Chinese government can spy in on.

I don't doubt you Tom. Then again, Tencent is a huge company. I play path of exile, I played Aion and some other tencent games and have made purchases in almost all of those games. Never had a phone call from China or w/e. What I am trying to say: Goddamn Epic is selling user data! :D

I do hope it serves as an eye-opener for a lot of people.

I take it you guys are in countries where GDPR does not apply (like US and Canada where it's common practice to sell and misuse private data). Otherwise you would already be suing Epic instead of bitching around.

Well, guess what. In China and a lot of other countries, it's common practice to steal data.
You have to ask yourself: what's your privacy worth, really?

Do not call lists are not a solution - they are a workaround to prevent your harassment leveraging data you already lost.

I'm using epic launcher since first day as a developer and bought more than 10 products worth hundreds of dollars and never got any calls or emails til today. Don't forget that epic launcher is maybe 5 years old and millions of developers already using it.

Also like other epic products, epic launcher user data statistics code source is open. If you are not a gamer who doesn't know any idea about by looking through code and only crying just because some games are being exclusive to epic store, sorry you are not the first user of it. As I know more than 5 million developers already uses it, including AAA studios.

Please stop crying just because exclusive games. If you really doubt about your user data just look at code, or find someone who can understand code before crying about it with lies.

But ggmania publish this kind of comment without doubt and thinking on their news. Sorry Tom, you are not the first user of epic launcher. Don't behave like that.

looks to me like you have no idea what you are talking about. All your points are false. I very much doubt you are who you say you are.

As a user of epic launcher for 5 years, that doesn't happen. Epic is really helpful to developers, and this will start to be helpfull also to users on price side in couple of years probably.

we are talking about epic store launcher that came out December 2018. You are using something else. End of discussion.
