A federal judge ordered OpenAI in May 2025 to preserve all ChatGPT user logs — even those users had deleted — as part of the New York Times copyright lawsuit. The directive, issued by Magistrate Judge Ona T. Wang, required the company to retain conversations from May through September 2025 across Free, Plus, Pro, and Team accounts. OpenAI later handed over 20 million de-identified chat logs to the plaintiffs despite strong privacy objections from its own executives. The company has since returned to normal deletion policies, but data from that period remains subject to litigation.
