ATI's Richard Huddy on Xbox360 - console
(hx) 10:14 AM CEST - Jun,18 2005 - Post a comment / read (4)
Gamestar.de has conducted an interview (fully in English) with Richard Huddy of ATI talking about Xbox 360. Here's a taster:
Will the Xbox 360 beat the PlayStation 3 in terms of performance?

What we know about the PlayStation 3 architecture is a little hazy - so some of the data is really just best guesses.

We do know they are targeting a 550MHz graphics core and we know that it will be based on NVIDIA's forthcoming G70 graphics chip.

That's bad news for the PlayStation 3. Current informed opinion is that the G70 will have at most 24 pixel shader pipes and much of the time they will run at low efficiency. It's a PC based design - which means that all the key customisation for a console is missing, and it's based on some relatively old PC-based graphics architectures from NVIDIA, whereas the Xbox 360 is an all new design based on what console developers have been asking for.

Because of all this I think that in every important way the Xbox 360 graphics chip is better suited to the task, and more powerful than what we expect in PlayStation 3. But this is a business that isn't only about technology. In the end the success or failure of a console is decided by the games that come out on that hardware. So, we understand that just because the Xbox is better than the PlayStation 3 need not necessarily mean that Xbox 360 will win the next round.

But ATI for its part has given Microsoft everything they need to succeed in the console wars. And I believe that Microsoft is really serious about making Xbox 360 the ultimate gaming machine. Microsoft's chances now lie in their own hands. And I'm very much looking forward to the contest - my money is on Microsoft!

I didn't see how does Gears of War look like, but I did watch a Killzone movie. F**k it looks awesome, putting all games to shame. Yeah, I know it comes out only in spring if not in summer 2006, but that was jaw-dropping. I'd like to find a Gears of War trailer, it would probably look on par.
Maybe my opinion is a bit biased, because I'm always supporting ATI. But the latest rumours say R520 beats G70 (10000 vs 7700 marks)
As always, we'll see.

More assumptions, speculation and ATI big-upping themselves puh-lease; they actually have the nerve to criticise nVIDIA saying their technology is back-dated and worthless
Nosferatu, word of advice before deciding what's better: don't believe rumors.

i watched both the ps3 and xbox360 presantion. they didnt state anytime at the xbox 360 presantation that this was real time on the hardware as far as i remember. and the stuff i could guess was real time and no render shot wasnt too spectacular.
In contrary at the ps3 they cleary said this or that was real time on ps3 hardware..(yeah i know it was supposed to be a sli setup..) but the surface maps presantation or the water physics (the eye toy thing with the cups) was really stunning the unreal3 engine in hdr too.
After all the xbox presantion seemed more like an us tv shopping show then a professional presantation.... and i am very anxious to see if we will see 128bit hdr rendring on the xbox 360.

Thanks for the advice Devilhood, but I didn't even presume I would make my choice anytime now :) It's far too early to state something about performance of still not finally built up machinery. I was just making guesses about what it'll all be like.
P.S: too bad Killzone won't make it to PC :( I couldn't find my jaw for about a day after seeing a trailer :)
