Games Domain has written a new preview of Arcanum: Of Steamworks & Magick Obscura, based on their impressions of a beta copy of the game. "Gameplay itself seems to boast a very nice balance of combat and interaction with other characters. Quests are many and varied, though it seems difficult to get away from fairly routine Fed Ex assignments where you go somewhere and do something to get something from somebody. While there's still something to be said for goal-oriented RPGs, it's becoming harder and harder to avoid a sense of deja vu when booting one up. One good thing about the way that Tim Cain and company have incorporated those old school quests into Arcanum is how they don't lead the player by the nose. So while the actual tasks may be fairly basic, you'll need to do a fair bit of exploring on your own to receive their assignment, and then more to complete them. Everything you accomplish is set down in a detailed journal that feature separate sections for everything that you do. One keeps track of "Rumors & Notes," another runs down "Kills and Injuries," and so on. This will no doubt come in extremely handy in the later stages of the game, considering just how much there is to do." [more]
