The Electric Playground has conducted an interview with Tim Cain, the cofounder of Troika Games. He developed Fallout for Interplay and started the initial design of Fallout 2 before departing to form Troika in 1998. Now of course, he's awaiting the release of their latest RPG, Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura, and considering future projects. Recently, he let Jason MacIsaac quiz him vigorously on Arcanum, RPGs, and two different Tim Cains.
EP: There are several RPGs coming, like Morrowind and Neverwinter Nights, that are promising a very deep RPG experience and they're also going to have editors for the gamer. What do you think sets Arcanum apart from them?
TC: We have a really, really, easy tool to use. I think we've shown that. And as Leonard would like to say, "Hey, we artists are using this." I think that 3D toolsets are just that much harder to use. I think Neverwinter Nights will be cool, but it's still D&D. I think we have a much less restrictive system. You can use the WorldEd to whatever depth that you want to. The power of adding the scripts and being able to adjust almost any stat and build anything really lets you make a really complex module if you want. But if people want to make a Diablo-like dungeon crawl, they could probably have that whipped out in about half an hour. I'm not sure if the others will be that easy to use, and I'm not sure if they provide the depth that our editor is going to, especially if you want to explore how the script editor works. [more]

This baby has some cool moves, BUT, if you imagine a bad rainy day when everything is grey and cloudy... okay, then you got the GUI for Arcanum, grey, black, brown... urgh! It's VERY dark... ok, the programmers want it this way, but I don't, and don't even try to sell me the consept of "steam" and "magic" crack and bull... it stinks!!! So... what is COOL is the character generator, but, even here we have a HIGE drawback - The coders in some cases don't even have a "female" sex as an option for character, like the Hafe-Orgre, and don't even think I am talking about the DEMO-version, no, I have the full game!!! So... if the entire game would have be like a huge one-stop character generation then it would be a blockbuster, but it's not, and when you come into the game one go like: - DAMN SHIT, IT LOOK EVEN WORSE! It sorry to say look like a homepage made on former Geocities... damn it! And to travel on the map is like trying to get forth and back alive from singapore with 1 tonn of heroine :)))) it's not possible dudes...... so, what's the option here: go and BUY Baldurs Gate 2 and the Throne of Bhaal, or Icewind Dale + HoW or even Baldurs Gate 1... I mean, Arcanum STINK! I don't care about the story, since if I write like a best seller on toiletpaper it STILL stinks, and if we really need a toilet paper in the RPG scene then our praiers have been answered... yrghh! It's not worth a date on two CD's if anyone ask me.
