Analyst: 'I Cannot Now Imagine a PlayStation 4' - console

Sony Corp. has decided to name Kaz Hirai, head of the U.S. game division, as president of Sony Computer Entertainment, while naming Ken Kutaragi chairman of the division. Although the father of the PlayStation has been promoted, he has been removed from day-to-day management. Analysts told the The Financial Times that Mr Hirai could mark a critical shift in management thinking, with Sony changing its emphasis so that the Playstation 3 will be its last as a hardware manufacturer. "The appointment of Hirai could be the start of a shift from hardware to software," said Yuta Sakurai, an analyst at Nomura. "I cannot now imagine a PlayStation 4."

In other news, Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has dismissed suggestions that Sony's executive reshuffle signals the company's exit from the console hardware market as 'foolish' and 'embarassing'. 'I think Kutaragi's promotion signals absolutely nothing about Sony's plans for a PlayStation 4,' Pachter told GamesIndustry.biz. 'I have said repeatedly that this is the last console "cycle" as we know them, and that future hardware would contain new features and functions, but not change the architecture until we are ready for virtual reality or holographic gaming,' Pachter concluded.

Everybody knows Sony does the worst software work of any entertainment company... this doesn't bode well.

So basically the PS4 is going to be a repackaged PS3 (a la sped up or whatever)...?? I'm not so sure virtual reality and such is what every wants. I mean it sure seems that way...The way the Wii is selling. But I know some people who still prefer just sitting on the couch versus getting up off it to play a good ole' game of Madden on the Wii. ie my dad. -_-

mig; depends on what division you mean. Sony is immense in size and is known to sue itself from time to time. :P

I'm a bit neutral to this. I believe that Kaz Hirai will try to better the situation of the PS3 before he makes any turns in the crossroads. I'm dearly hoping in a quick improvement of the Playstation Network for an example as well as better support for developers.

On one hand Sony needs to make the PS3 worthwhile and on another they need to move into a different position as a company - maybe away from hardware and into software. With some hope, Hirai may do what Kutaragi failed in.
