- First test for US monster bomb - In a show of military might
seemingly aimed at intimidating Iraq's armed forces, the US has tested the
most powerful non-nuclear weapon ever developed. The new weapon is named the
Massive Ordinance Air Burst (MOAB), but has also been dubbed the "Mother
of All Bombs". The 9.7-tonne device contains only conventional explosives, but
creates a mushroom cloud and a shockwave similar to that of a small nuclear
explosion. It has blast range of several hundred metres.
- How Hydrogen Can Save America - How much money? How about the
amount spent to put a man on the moon: $100 billion in today's dollars. With
that investment, the nation could shift the balance of power from foreign oil
producers to US energy consumers within a decade.
By 2013, a third of all new cars sold could be hydrogen-powered, 15 percent of
the nation's gas stations could pump hydrogen, and the US could get more
than half its energy from domestic sources, putting independence within reach.
All that's missing is a national commitment to make it happen.
- British scientists in bio-terror breakthrough - A UK scientist has
developed a
revolutionary computer-based DNA fingerprinting technology that he hopes
could save thousands of lives. The computerised technique can identify bugs
far more quickly than current methods. Authorities could use it to
identify killer bugs contained in biological attacks launched by terrorists
and speed up the treatment of victims.
- McDonald's to Offer Wireless Internet - Would you like
super-sized Internet access with that burger and fries? In a further sign
of the spread of wireless Internet technology, McDonald's restaurants in three
U.S. cities will offer one hour of free high-speed access to anyone who buys a
combination meal. Ten McDonald's in Manhattan will begin offering wireless
WiFi, or 802.11b, Internet access on Wednesday, McDonald's spokeswoman Lisa
Howard said.
- Are Windows Broadband Users at Risk? - The weakness specifically
refers to
nonexistent or easily discovered passwords on SMB (Server Message Block)
file shares, with thousands of systems being compromised in this way, CERT/CC
said in an advisory. Windows uses the SMB protocol to share files and printer
resources with other computers. The two versions of the operating system
referred to in the CERT bulletin transfer information via TCP/IP. These
systems are vulnerable to attacks using tools such as W32/Deloder, GT-bot,
sdbot, and W32/Slackor. Older operating systems which share SMB information
differently are not vulnerable, according to CERT/CC.
- New Code Red Variant Causes Concern -
A new version of the Code Red worm is spreading on the Internet, more than
18 months after the original worm infected Web servers worldwide, according to
alerts posted Wednesday by a number of antivirus software vendors. The new
version, labeled CodeRed.F, is almost identical to another Code Red variant,
CodeRed.C, also known as Code Red II, according to information posted by
F-Secure of Helsinki, Finland.
- Intel Unveils Wireless Computer Chips - At news conferences
throughout Asia and Europe
Intel unveiled a set of chips known as Centrino, which it said will allow
mobile computer users to access the Internet at home and a growing number of
public places via radio waves. Intel said Centrino notebooks would cost about
the same as current laptops, starting as low as $1,399. In Japan, models are
expected to sell for as low as 200,000 yen (US$1,702).
- Samsung unveils Sens X10 Centrino-based notebook - Samsung
Electronics today unveiled its
Sens X10 Centrino-based notebook, weighing 1.8 kilograms and measuring
only 23.8mm (less than one inch) in thickness.
- AMD Unveils Notebook CPUs - AMD is trying to steal some of Intel's
Centrino thunder by
announcing 12 new notebook processors, including five low-voltage chips
designed for thin-and-light notebooks and higher-wattage chips for larger
notebooks. AMD's five new low-voltage chips carry the model numbers 1800+,
1700+, 1600+, 1500+, and 1400+. They make use of a Micro PGA (pin grid array)
design that differs from AMD's traditional Socket A pin design, Varela says.
Micro PGA occupies less space on the motherboard, allowing notebook vendors to
build smaller systems, he said. The low-voltage chips dissipate 25 watts when
operating at maximum power.
- AMD Drops Prices On Processors -
AMD Athlon
XP CPUs are continuing on the trip down the pricing roadmap today. Surely
it must be a complete coincidence that the prices are being dropped on the
same day as Intel launches its new Centrino technology. The biggest
shift has happened in the middle of the range with the 2200+ dropping to $107,
the 2400+ to $141 and the 2600+ to $241. Playing odd-man-out in the pricing
curve is the 2700+ which is only $26 more than a 2600+.
The full list of new prices on the XP follows: 3000+ $588, 2800+ $375, 2700+
$267, 2600+ $241, 2400+ $141, 2200+ $107, 2100+ $92, 2000+ $81, 1800+ $67,
1700+ $54.
