Linus Torvalds says oversized Linux kernel release candidates have become the “new normal,” partly thanks to AI tools.

In the announcement for Linux 7.2-rc7, he noted the release candidate is unusually large due to many small fixes uncovered by AI-assisted code reviews. Torvalds admitted he is “not exactly thrilled” about the growing size but sees no serious problems in the changes.

He expects the final Linux 7.2 release to arrive on schedule next weekend unless major issues appear. Most of the extra volume consists of tiny driver, filesystem, and networking fixes spread across the kernel.

All I can say is that I was doing some programming this weekend using AI (nothing serious, just a 2D shooter, because I wrote something like that in assembly language back in 1991). Now it just has better graphics and stuff and the resulting code in Rust is actually pretty good—I have to admit.

I probably couldn’t have written it much better myself - maybe some hardcore optimizations, but overall, it’s fine by me.

Just like Linus recently said, AI is just the next step: first there was machine code, then compilers and interpreters brought a huge relief to programmers, and now AI coding is replacing the need to know programming languages. I guess we’ll all have to get used to it-it’s simply THE NEXT STEP!

And nothing looks particularly scary per se - it's just that there's a
lot here. Most of it is fairly small, although we have a couple of
larger diffs: s390/zcrypt fixes stand out in the diffstat, and so does
btrfs bringing back the fixup worker infrastructure. And some
netfilter ipset fixes.

But aside from a few places like that, most of this is just lots of
tiny fixes. It's pretty much spread all over - drivers (gpu, sound,
networking, you name it), filesystems, core networking, arch code..

I don't currently see any value in delaying the 7.2 release, so I
would expect that to happen next weekend unless something really bad
pops up.

People who don't know how to code should not be allowed to "code" using an LLM. People who do know how to code can use them, and then verify the work. It's fine as a work saver and efficiency improver. Less fine if it's just doing its own thing.
