A new tool called BitUnlocker lets attackers with physical access bypass BitLocker encryption on fully patched Windows 11 devices in under 5 minutes. It exploits a downgrade attack using an old, still-trusted boot manager certificate (CVE-2025-48804), loading a modified recovery environment that decrypts the drive without alerts. The attack works on systems using TPM-only BitLocker but is blocked by TPM + PIN setups or newer certificate migrations. Users should enable a startup PIN and apply Microsoft's certificate migration update for protection.

My advice: if you need full-disk encryption, just use VeraCrypt instead. Seriously.

I thought this was patched nearly a year ago, so fully patched systems should be resilient to this today.
