Europe's Digital Rebellion: France Ditches Windows for Linux as Governments Flee US Tech Giants France is accelerating its push for digital sovereignty by migrating government workstations from Microsoft Windows to Linux, with the Interministerial Digital Directorate (DINUM) starting the transition and ordering all ministries to eliminate extra-European dependencies by autumn 2026. This builds on January's mandate requiring 2.5 million civil servants to abandon Microsoft Teams and Zoom for the French-built Visio video platform by 2027.

Germany's Schleswig-Holstein state has already replaced Microsoft Exchange for over 40,000 email accounts with open-source Open-Xchange and Thunderbird while switching SharePoint to Nextcloud.

Austria's military completed a similar shift, moving 16,000 workstations to LibreOffice on Linux desktops for enhanced security and independence.

These verified moves reflect a broader European trend to reduce reliance on non-EU providers through open-source alternatives.
