Fake Ledger App on Apple App Store Drains Over $400,000 in Bitcoin - tech
(hx) 05:13 PM CEST - Apr,13 2026 - Post a comment / read (3)
Philadelphia musician Garrett Dutton, known as G. Love, lost his entire 5.92 BTC retirement savings—worth about $424,000—after downloading a counterfeit Ledger Live app from Apple's Mac App Store on April 11, 2026. While setting up a hardware wallet on a new Mac, he searched for the official app, installed what appeared legitimate, and entered his 24-word seed phrase when prompted. On-chain investigator ZachXBT traced the stolen funds through nine transactions to KuCoin deposit addresses. The incident highlights risks in even "curated" app stores and serves as a stark reminder: never enter your seed phrase into any software—verify downloads directly from official sources.

 quote: He said scammers often distribute fake wallet apps through email, deceptive advertisements, and even physical mail. The security expert added that users should treat any message urging them to download or update wallet software as a scam until they independently verify it. No Official App Store App: Ledger does not offer a Desktop Ledger Live app through the Apple Mac App Store.
