Veteran Microsoft engineer David Plummer revealed that the original Windows Task Manager he created in the 1990s was a lean 80KB executable, designed to run smoothly on the era's limited hardware even when the system was hanging. Instead of a basic check for existing instances, it sent a private message to any running copy and waited for a reply—if none came, it assumed the instance had frozen and launched a fresh one.

This clever fail-safe ensured the critical recovery tool stayed responsive precisely when users needed it most. Plummer shared the story as Task Manager marks 30 years, contrasting its tiny footprint with today's roughly 4MB version.
