Vast.ai, a peer-to-peer GPU rental platform, announced the availability of 697 NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 units for rent at $0.42 per hour, highlighting the card's 32GB GDDR7 memory and January 2025 release at a $1,999 MSRP, allowing AI enthusiasts to bypass scalpers amid ongoing supply shortages.
The RTX 5090, powered by NVIDIA's Blackwell architecture, delivers 27-35% better performance than its predecessor, the RTX 4090, but real-world prices have ballooned to $3,000-$5,000 due to DRAM shortages and high demand, making rentals an attractive alternative for burst workloads.
However, user reactions on X largely mocked the model, pointing out that a full-year rental could cost over $3,600—exceeding even inflated purchase prices on credit—echoing "you'll own nothing and be happy" sentiments.
Competing services like SaladCloud offer even lower rates at $0.25 per hour, underscoring the growing democratization of high-end compute resources.

This generation love this format. Rent everything own nothing.
How about having a car on PCP £42,000 and paying (£500-750) to drive it for 42 months and limited to 5,000 miles per year and then handing it back.
Default on payments and they take the car back but you continue to pay the remainder over the months you should have paid.

People today, don’t have money. It’s all outgoings on rentals, contracts etc.
They want everything today, minus the money to do it. Gone are the generations (like us) that if we wanted something we saved for it -patiently.

The only thing we rent is our house. No cable packages, freesat and freeview is what we have. The car is ours and everything in the house.

There was a long standing saying about generations today that we said decades ago and it stands more than ever.

“They know the price of everything, and the value of nothing”.
