The news, shared by producer Roy Lee in a recent Collider interview, signals the end of years of development limbo for the project based on the iconic 2007 video game from Irrational Games. Lawrence, known for helming The Hunger Games sequels, Constantine, and I Am Legend, has been attached since 2022 but sidelined by commitments like his upcoming Hunger Games prequel, Sunrise on the Reaping (set for December 2026 release). "We're just waiting for him to finish post-production, because he's going to be working on it through at least September, and then jump back into it," Lee explained. Once wrapped, BioShock becomes his next priority, with Lee cautiously optimistic: "It's steadily on the path... the intent is to hopefully get in production next year."
The script, penned by Michael Green (Blade Runner 2049, Logan) with revisions by Justin Rhodes, faithfully adapts the original game's narrative: a plane crash survivor plunges into the decaying Art Deco metropolis of Rapture, battling splicers, Big Daddies, and moral quandaries amid Andrew Ryan's objectivist nightmare. No cast has been announced, and details remain under wraps, but the film has been reconfigured post-2024 Netflix regime changes to a more intimate, effects-heavy production rather than a sprawling epic. Adding fuel to the hype, Netflix and publisher Take-Two Interactive are coordinating the movie's release to align with fresh BioShock entries—likely the long-rumored BioShock 4 from Cloud Chamber, now targeting late 2027 after delays, reboots, and layoffs. "I know that Netflix and Take-Two are very anxious to see the movie come out because they want to have the release coincide with some of the potential new incarnations of the game," Lee revealed.
This cross-media strategy echoes successes like The Last of Us and Fallout, potentially revitalizing the franchise dormant since BioShock Infinite in 2013.The road to Rapture has been treacherous: Initial attempts in the 2000s with Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean) fizzled over budget woes, followed by Universal's abandoned R-rated vision. Netflix revived it in 2022, but strikes, rewrites, and Lawrence's schedule pushed it back-until now. If all aligns, cameras could roll next year, eyeing a 2028 streaming debut. For gamers and cinephiles, the plunge into Rapture's plasmid-fueled chaos feels closer than ever.
